First time post... new member

My step-daughter goes in as SH on Aug 8

My question is regarding her car. I assume she will be at sea for 4-5 years.

What are options for her car during that time.

Thank you.

Cruises are rarely over 7 months..........

Peggyann won't be able to have a car until after A School. After that, it depends on what her orders are. The Navy has storage available during deployments. She will NOT be at sea for the entire time. She will likely have two deployments over her first 4 years. They can last up to 7 months...after which she will be on a land rotation.

Just because she is on sea duty does not mean she will be at sea.  She can get permission to park on base, and might even have a barracks room in a building with parking.  Depending on where she is stationed, she will find a car essential for the months the ship will be at their home port.

The Navy will not ship her car in most cases.  She will need to come and get it, pay to have it shipped, or have a family member drive it to her new base and then fly them back home.

Margaret is correct in that a car will be essential when the ship is in her home port. I bought my first car when I was home on leave after A-School and my dad drove it to me after I got back to Orlando to start Nuke school. As was mentioned before, the Navy does have long term parking available on most bases for deployed Sailors. That may turn out to be more of a hassle than it's worth, though, because there are usually limited windows of time to drop off/pick up vehicles when your are leaving on or returning from deployment and if you miss the window things could prove to be difficult. If the ship is only going to be underway for a month or less, they can usually leave their cars parked at the pier (or the designated parking area for their ship). For a full on deployment, I would advise leaving the car with a trusted friend or family member instead of parking it on base.
