To Chuck...ultimately it's your son's decision.  One thing for sure will happen when he gets to boot camp...for about the first two weeks there will be a lot of soul searching and second thoughts of "why in the heck did I join the Navy?"  My second comment is no matter how good a shape your son thinks he's in he needs to double that.  Not for boot camp..for what follows.  My recommendation is to REALLY concentrate on the shoulders, total core and legs.  For the legs he should be doing lots of lunges and dead lifts if he can do them safely.  If he can get a weight vest, use that for all body weight exercises and long rucks.  The demand won't be on the chest so much as the shoulders.  This goes for any 800 division recruit.  The emphasis needs to be on the shoulders, core and legs.  Once you think you are there it needs to be doubled in order to give yourself the best shot at success.

Hi everyone. My son charlie has a long way to go still, his ship date as of now is August 4th. Of course his goal has been to qualify for Aviation Rescue Swimmer which will probably change that date a little. I'm a little bit nervous now because he's starting to talk about other areas of Spec Ops. I have no doubt he will qualify physically, he's a stellar athlete and a natural leader. But what he's saying now is, if if he qualifies and there are openings for SWCC and not ARS that he might go that route. I know I have to support his decisions, but I'm really nervous about him making a decision like that at his age. He's a really mature 17, but still 17.

Hi Everyone,

Have been Awol from navy Dads for short time- My son graduated boot camp on May 16th, then went to other side of Great lakes to SCC ( Surface Common Core School), Since we only live about 2 hours from GLNS- most of my week ends have been taken up by picking him up and dropping off. This Monday he is done , and will be on leave for 10 days before reporting to NS- Everett ,WA.

to Everyone in DEP ( Parents and recruits)- the time flies past, once the training starts. Before My son left for BC ,I sent him away with following advice ( some fatherly and some from My Army Drill Sargeant days).

1. If in decent starting physical shape- BC is then 85% Mental Conditioning & 20% physical conditioning. Common slang on many sites- "embrace the suck". It will be over in 8 weeks.

2. sometime in the first couple days/week, you will have a "OMG what have I got myself into" panic moment. This is normal, it will pass and you will be fine.

3. The First week/s -In-processing your going to feel is a waste of time, much of the same you did at MEPS, again "embrace the suck", and just go with the flow, don't go against it. You have people coming in from every corner of the US and world- its how the govt. assimilates individuals into a group.

4. Enjoy the hair cut!

5. Your always being watched- Conduct yourself, as if your being graded all the time. Even if on "policing" detail or standing in a line.

6. When assigned a task- take action, DONT BE AFRAID of being wrong. No Action  because afraid of being wrong is worst then taking wrong action- and if is wrong , you will be corrected.

7. BC is meant to break down individualism and promote the team. Don't be one of the persons who hang out, "on the side" of everything. Help others out, who may be struggling in certain actions.

Im going to have to break this into parts - or will get too long!

My Grandson Jacob has been in the DEP since Nov. 15th and will leave for RTC Mar 11th 2014. Then on to Sub school, and "A" school after that. If he makes it through all that he then can request "C" School (SECF) and hopefully ET 3rd class.

we tend to be pretty blunt here and don't sugar coat much....keep at it....perseverance pays off sometimes.....how was your ASVAB score?

The economy is in the toilet....the Navy has WAAAAAAY more folks trying to join than they need....my guess....trying to find a way to reject you.  Have heard of recruits being discharged from RTC for severe acne..........

Denise - I work with Deppers.  I have these two people leaving at that time frame.  Your future sailor might want to connect up with them.  They may be in the same division at boot camp.  They are at NavyDEP.com
