Hello fellow Navy Dads.  My son has been homeported out of Sasebo, Japan for a couple of years.  I hadn't realized until today that there was a Japan Dads segment here on this site!  I am also a veteran of the USN - RM2(SS)2304.  My son is an AG2 on the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6.

We have one daughter.  She is the baby (youngest child) of the family. After 2 years of an alphabet soup of RTC, A & C schools the Navy sent her to meet her first ship in Yokosuka, Japan.  That is a bit north east of Iwakuni and the other side of the world from our home in Dallas.

The Navy has taken good care of her in Japan.  It has been amazing how many sailors she met during her training in the States that have also ended up in Japan.  She ended up knowing more people when she arrived in Japan, than she would have known if she had gone to the local community college.  She has never been lonely or without friends.  She has even made a few new friends during her two trips to mainland China.

Skype has helped us stay in fairly close touch while she is in port.  If you are like us, you will miss your daughter terribly, but this is an incredible path to blossoming into a well grounded, mature adult.

Good luck to your sailor and God bless.

David, I was stationed in South Korea from 91-92. I met my husband there and enjoyed myself.

My daughter has recently reported to her first duty station in Iwakuni, Japan as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Does anyone have a loved one there?

Blondie, I hear you and I think I "get it" too, even though I'm a dad.  Thanks to you and your daughter and son, and I hope all goes well for your daughter.

Never had anyone that wanted to start a Korea group.....start one!! We'll help you out.....

There seems to be no group for Korea.  So the the families of sailors in SK get to hank out here?

Well guess where my son is going!  I had a friend way back about 1980 who had been in Korea and absolutely loved it.  So I hope my son does too.
