USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71

Mission
USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) is a key element of our country's forward-deployed defense strategy. Tasked with maintaining open sea lanes of trade and communications, TR is capable of projecting air superiority to all points of the globe. The embarked Carrier Air Wing Eight aircraft serve as outstanding instruments of peace. Anytime and anywhere TR reports for duty, she brings 4.5 acres of sovreign U.S. territory and 97,000 tons of diplomacy. TR's equipment and crew are always maintained at the highest state of readiness. This enables the ship to carry out a wide variety of missions, including: air warfare, strike warfare, surface warfare, undersea warfare and electronic warfare. TR also shares the task of replenishing ships at sea and performing a variety of non-combat missions, such as the rescue at sea of people in distress and the transport of refugees and others in need of help. People make TR more than a mere mass of steel, cables and pipes. She is a floating city of 5,500 professional men and women from every state in the Union. It is the veteran Sailor with gold on his dress blues and the young 17-year old, away from home for the first time, who provide TR with heart and soul. Leadership, training and professionalism blend each of these individual personalities toward one goal ... being ready to exercise the power of TR in support of the "Forward Presence" mission of the U.S. Navy.

HooYa Fred! Eric hadn't mentioned the accidient- guess the flight deck deserves it's reputation as the most dngerous workplace in the world!

Sorry about the cool reception you got from the boss...sometimes they just don't understand! I hope to be there in Norfolk as I had to miss his deployment. The Lincoln just retuned to Everett about 2 weeks ago....Kat flew from Hawaii to Vegas to spend some time with her mom so no big homecoming for me....I was lucky enough to be in Everett when she sailed though so it kinda balances out! I sure would have liked to do a Tiger Cruise with her though! I don't know what the plans are for the Roosevelt so I still might get my chance!

I know it is probably a dumb question but, I expect that you will be in Norfolk when Eric returns next April? It would be a good oportunity to meet in person as I am sure to be there.

I am an IT and Facilities Manager for an add agency in St. Louis and we will moving our office around then. I have already told my boss that if the move happens to be at the same time that Kira is coming home that I will no be there to help. She said well we all have to make decisions in kinda of a stern tone. Well I can safely say that this will be a no-brainer for me as I will be there for Kira no matter what as family trumps work any day!!!

I see that your daughter is on the Lincoln. How is she doing and when will she be back home?

Yes, we spoke to Kira this morning and she said that they have planes over Aghanistan now. I also pray every day that they all do their best and that they are all able to return home safe and sound. When I spoke to her I said it didn't take long to get onstation after leaving Cape Town and she sadi that there was an accident on deck the other day where a sailor got caught in jet exhaust. So, they had to high tail it so he could get airlifted off for treatment. I just hope that he is ok. It is so dangerous what they do. Fred

Guess this is it Fred- Eric sent a mail that they've taken over watch duty from the Reagan and that he's seen live ord on the flight deck....as he so well put it "We're dropping real bombs now. I saw them all yesterday lined up getting ready to head up to the roof to go to the farm". God Bless our sailors and keep them safe......Paul

Kira, got her shot the other day too. She was trying to avoid them but, I guess they caught up to her. What is you son's rate? Fred

Ahoy Fred!! First deployments for both our sailors! Eric noted he's dealing the anthrax vaccines right now....always something to worry about!! Wish your sailor my best wishes-- it's a tough duty to sacrifice so much familiy time. Whne you send your daughter a message, please thank her and your son-in-law for their service to our Country! Paul

My daughter is a MM-Nuke on the TR and this is her first deployment. Her husband is also in the Navy and a MM-Nuke-ELT on the sub USS Scranton and will be deploying sometime in Feb. So, they will not see each other until he returns next August.

A couple of media shots of the Big Stick pulling into Cape Town, South Africa. It's the first carrier since '67 to visit South Africa!!
