Michael, We live in Binghamton.  Our son had a classmate who lived in Scranton so he got home for a couple of weekends.  Not sure how much farther Rochester is as the crow flies.  WE went a couple of times to visit.    If you go, stay at the Navy Lodge there.  They have a really nice museum and the USS Nautilus is there.  Well worth the visit and I recommend going to BESS and A school graduations.  Pete

Thanks for all the responses.......my son just confirmed that he believes he will NOT be able to have extended liberty for about a year or more...:(.......but we live in Rochester, NY and should be able to get down to him once he is given weekend liberty

It depends on breaks in the school and how classes form up.  When my son went through, classes shut down over Christmas/YE holidays so many sailors went home on leave and this was in the middle of BESS.  While classes are in session, I would guess there is zero chance for leave.  As they progress through their classes, they get elevated status and are allowed more weekend and week night priveledges.  If he is in a program that will have additional schools as a follow on to BESS, there might be an opportunity if his next school is not classing up right away.  In A school, when they were not on duty on the weekend, they could travel within a certain distance (~250 miles) without a problem.  After A school, my son did get about a week and a half of leave.  Bottom line is if you are on the east coast, there could be weekend visits.  If you are not, you will have to wait for formal breaks in the classes that he is attending or completion of his school.

New to site, have a son who is an Ensign and going to NFO school.  Don't meet the req. for the group, but as a retired HMC/SS, will answer any questions about the boats and deployments I can.  Was station in Pearl Harbor, Groton, Shipyard in Kittery MA, Norfolk VA and Charleston SC

Hi Cheri, Your son will get some leave time since he is done with A school.  We live on the east coast so we just took him home with us after he checked out.  Haven't had much communications with him.  He is very independent minded and wants to prove to us that he is on his own.  I understand this since at his age I was the same way.  Of course I didn't move 1/2 way around the world.  Pete

Some of the work listed in that description may have been shifted to the newer informations systems tech rating.  Not sure how many informational techs have made it on the subs.

When we attended our son's "A" school graduation for FT, the chief who spoke talked about the different roles of the SECF people.  I learned that it is the FT's job to take all the inputs from sonar and track their locations.  The officer of the deck then relies on the FT to steer the boat and perform other manuevers such as surfacing.  So I got the distinct impression that when FT's are standing there watchthey are essentially keeping the boat from hitting other ships.  This is a lot of responsibility.  I also read that FT's traditionally have the responsibility of looking for ways to "reduce noise inside the boat"   Pete
