Please remember that we talk about the Navy here and we must keep the security and safety of our sailors and the fleet in mind. On the right or starboard side of every NavyDads page is an area we call Key Information. Please take a minute and read through the Operations Security (OPSEC) link for some guidelines as to what we should not talk about in a public forum like NavyDads.com.
EVERY member is advised to read thru our OPSEC link....we take the security of our sailors and the fleet seriously and we expect our members to do so as well.
You mentioned that some of the things here are absurd...seriously? We have been nothing but open and as honest with you as much as we could. We do not sugar coat our answers. We are here for information and to help guide mom and dad through their son's or daughter's experience.
I am deeply offended that you thought we are being "absurd." If you think you have to chase your son's ship all around the Pacific, have at it. Only he and he alone will be able to tell you where and when. ...and even then, he better not be putting that information out on the internet for all to see.
I think you should know at this point that I have started a file for you with all of these comments. We are not in the business of just kicking folks out for no reason.
Try joining some of the other sites out there and see how far you get by telling them the answers they give are absurd. Navy For Moms would not tolerate you for a New York minute.
Jack, Margaret saw our chat from last night and this is what she said:
"I doubt they would recall a new sailor off leave. It can happen, but they'd really need to need him. If the billet was that hot, they'd have him report and spend his time waiting for his clearance at his new command, doing busy work or cranking.
As for the airfare, he lets the travel office know he wants to fly home en route. They arrange the flights, then charge him for he leg home. Since the Navy gets bulk travel discounts, it is generally cheaper and easier to just notify the travel office of leave plans.
If he is going home while on a hold, then he buys a round trip ticket to and from the school command out of his own pocket."
BS21 typically Saturday prior to PIR until and including the Thursday before PIR.....exact schedules are considered secure info and cannot be discussed in open forums
Jack, I just saw your question in our chat. We have heard of sailors literally running from BS21 to their ships to shower and change then run to PIR. But hopefully that won't happen to your sailor. Just keep your phone on and within arms reach at all times from here on in. The "I'm a sailor!" call is one you surely don't want to miss!
Welcome to NavyDads.com Jack ! When my daughter enlisted in 2005 and left for RTC, I had virtually no knowledge of Navy life or how the Navy did things. By the time her PIR rolled around, I was starting to get the hang of things and understand some of the language and abbreviations, but still felt like a fish out of water when dealing with most topics concerning the US Navy. When my son enlisted and left for Great Lakes in 2007, I got serious about trying to learn as much as possible about the Navy. Now, several years into my journey, I’m blessed to say I have two sailors in the family - my son Eric (AM2) was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), was attached to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37 (HSM-37) in Hawaii, and is now attached to VAW-125 ("The Tigertails"). My daughter Kat is now a Navy veteran and was stationed on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) as a Mass Communications Specialist(MC3). If NavyDads.com were around in those early days, it would have made my first days as a Navy parent much easier!
I'm sure you'll find NavyDads.com as useful, educational and informative as I have over the past few years. Click How To Get Started for a guide on getting going in your NavyDads.com experience! I hope you take the time to explore the site and make some new friends. Read the discussions and add your comments. Browse through the postings in the various groups or start a new one. If you have any comments, questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...be sure to post them! In my experience someone here can answer your questions or concerns or can point you in the direction to find out. And Jack this is a great place to brag as well! So join in, get active, and be sure to let us know how your son is doing! Please remember that we talk about the Navy here and we must keep the security and safety of our sailors and the fleet in mind. As a parent of a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what Sam is going through. In the Navy Bootcamp group is a discussion called A MUST READ for all New Navy Parents. Read through this post as it will do a lot to give you some understanding about what your sailor is learning and why. And be sure to check out the videos available in the Bootcamp Group as well and as PIR nears be sure to spend time in the PIR group for hints and helps!
Best Regards- Paul

Welcome aboard to NavyDads.com Jack! When my son first enlisted, I was a little scared and worried for him. Not coming from a military family at all, I had no idea what to expect. What I found out was that he had made the most mature decision of his life! I found lots of answers to my questions right here on NavyDads.com.
My son Stephen was an AWO2 in the P-3 community. However, after 6 years of service, he was medically discharged in July of 2014. We are proud of our son and his service to our country.
Jack....Welcome to Navy Dads! We all feel the same pride in our sailors! We can get you up to speed as to Military life. Start off by joining our Boot Camp group and watch the videos of RTC. You will see just what Sam has ahead of him. We will get you through Basic and onto the day of PIR(Graduation). Know also that the educational benefits that Sam will be earning are excellent and will help him greatly in shaping his future!
NavyDads mission is to Provide Support, Encouragement, and Knowledge to Sailors and their Families throughout their Journey together in the United States Navy.

Well Jack, the link to the guidelines for OPSEC has been down on the right side of the main page since 2009. But here it is just for you ol' buddy:

Yes- your son in the US Navy and they will define where he can and cannot go regardless of what you want or think.
