My sailor got to the fleet three years ago and without letting anything out of the bag, the biggest reason people were dropped from nuclear training had nothing to do with academics but poor choices they made off duty.  Per my sailor, nukes are some of the smartest people he has ever met but they lack common sense much of the time and make very poor decisions that can cost them dearly.  I know the Navy warns sailors of this all the time yet it continues to happen unfortunately.

My background is in education planning.  I've studied public attrition data.  In general, 85-90 percent of recruits make it through boot camp, and 75-80 percent make it through A-School.   Nuclear A-School is a little tougher - so their accession rate would be 70-75 percent.  I'm not aware of published data on NPS and Prototype.  An educated guess is that it's entirely reasonable to figure that about half of the recruits that start into the nuclear pipeline will end up on a ship with a nuclear rate.  Is the glass half full or half empty? I hope you're an optimist.   

I don't think attrition rates are really the key here.  What is important is that only about half of the attrition in Naval training is due to academic issues.  The remaining half is a combination of motivation and discipline.  

Nuclear jobs take two years of training.  I think you need to know where you're headed, and you need to want to go there.   

My son set his sites on a nuclear sub a couple of years ago --- and that's where he's headed.  

It turns out that the Navy's success/attrition rates are about the same as they'd be for a moderately selective public university.  That's not very surprising, since Nuclear Power training is, for all practical purposes, a college-level education. 

In any event - don't worry about "odds."  Worry about motivation and behavior.

My son graduates Oregon state in June and gets commissioned. He then goes back through power school and prototype as an officer. Then to sub school. He applied for STA21 in power school and was accepted. Needless to say his other and I are proud.

I don't comment here often, but do enjoy reading a lot of you folks' posts here. Our EM graduated from Great Lakes almost a year ago, and is scheduled to graduate from PS mid Feb. We are very proud of his resolve to complete this phase of training. And although there is good info on some things here, I agree with Tom Lufkin, that ever since boot, we are well aware our nukes are expected to keep mum on certain details of their service and vessel status. Not knowing what delays will arise with proto's is difficult since his sister's wedding is in Nov, & he's "supposed" to be in it. But we'll just pray things work out. All of you here who have nukes graduating PS in the next several weeks, big congrats to you & your sailors! And to any of you who are just getting started, best thing is just keep up the positive support. I know they appreciate it! Oh, and by the way, we're in SE Louisiana; last week went from record low's of upper 20's on Monday & Tuesday nights (jan 6th & 7th) to near 80 during the day last Friday! Tough stuff on the sinuses! Lol

Oh Richard - I can't wait for the day when we get that phone call from our sailor! LOL  He'll be starting proto sometime in March so if we are lucky by the end of the year - then momma's gonna buy a new pair of shoes!

Hope you all heard the humor in that comment ---- actually - I'm choked up and proud...... Seems like my kid is turning into a man. Not sure if I should thank the Navy or Father Time. Either way - I'm very grateful, and proud to be a nuke dad.

Something's wrong --- there must be some radio active waste leaking.  Either that or the polar vortex actually reached hell.

Beside myself with gratitude and pride. Just learned my sailor is Nuke Qualified - passed his boards this morning. Praise the Lord!  On to graduation - BS, here we come!
