At one time ,I read sailors go to expeditionary combat skill training school in Mississippi, following basic - does the Navy still do this, or is it something a sailor does later in their training career ?

ECS is primarily for MAs out of RTC, or those sailors who get assigned to Coastal Riverine Groups (CRGs). Some MAs go there right of A School, or down the road as my son did. But other Rates are involved with the CRGs; it takes sailors from across the Rates to create versatile teams.

    About an hour ago:

RTC FRIENDS: It has come to the attention of the Public Affairs Office that recent form letters were sent out with the wrong graduation date. The correct graduation date for divisions 125 thru 134 and division 921 is 4 April, 2014.

    Hello all,

Well, our son left for RTC today, and it was one of the hardest things my wife and I have ever gone through.  Thank God for this site because so many questions are going through my head...

If anyone has any idea of driving vs flying to Great Lakes, that would be much appreciated.  We are in northern Maryland, and it does not look too bad to drive it + we would not be constrained to flight times and would be able to spend every possible minute of liberty together.  Thoughts?

    Thanks

  • Navy Dads Co-Admin Tom

Firstly....Welcome to the family, Marco! It is a very difficult time for parents...just read some of the threads to know that you are not alone. We have all been through it and understand exactly what you are feeling my friend! Regarding driving vs. flying.....depending upon your son's future A School (at Great Lakes or elsewhere) will effect just how much liberty time he will have. Most Sailors head out Saturday morning after PIR. You will have time on Friday and can rejoin him at the airport until he leaves. Those that stay at Great Lakes will have the rest of the weekend of liberty. Best of luck to your Son in the coming months!

  • Marco Mattucci

Thank you Tom, I appreciate the reply and words of encouragement.

  • Don Sherwood

Marco...I am driving there next week, and I live in Frederick...I will let you know!
    Don
  • Marco Mattucci

Awesome!!!  and Congratulations!!!  Please let me know.  I figure for the cost of airfare and everything else, it would just be easier to leave a day earlier and see the sights by car.  Thanks for the reply.

    hey Marco......College Park grad here...class '77

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

    from RTC:

GUESTS ATTENDING GRADUATION TOMORROW: Tomorrow morning’s forecast is calling for wind chill temperatures of -15. Keep in mind that at this temperature frost bite can occur in about 20 minutes.

Recruit Training Command recommends that guests should:
    • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded. Please refrain from wearing clothes that leaves your legs and arms exposed to the weather.
    • Wear a hat, because 40 percent of your body heat can be lost from your head.
    • Wear Mittens or gloves.

Got our letter today!!!!  Although this site has always made me feel welcome and a part of something bigger, but having this letter I REALLY feel like part of the team here.  I know we still have a good way to go before graduation, but to everyone in the Boot Camp Group - Thank you to the members who encouraged me in the beginning and hang in there those still waiting for that letter.  It's like crossing a milestone!!!

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

now you can really start writing YOUR letters!!!!

  • Marco Mattucci

You know it.  Already started the second one!!!  Thanks

  • Joseph Cavallo

Congrats Marco. It's a slow ride to PIR but you will say, wow that went fast at some point. Now, at least for us, we got a 90 second phone call the Saturday after we got the letter. Don't want to give false hopes but want you to realize you should answer EVERY unknown number going forward. It wasn't an easy call, he was drained and beat down, but it was good to connect. You never know, the first call is a blessing. Good Luck!
  • Marco Mattucci

Absolutely…I will answer all calls…dealing with the million phone solicitors is worth a single minute of real conversation with my SR…thanks

  • Eric Mount

The calls come up with area code 847. You can still screen out the solicitors :)
  • Mike J Johnson

It also comes up pay phone.

  • Bill Hopkins

Coming from a Army background - still learning Navy lingo- the RTC organization "ship" , is that like a Army Company ? and a "Division" is that like a Army Platoon?

    Thanks- Bill

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

"Ship" = barracks, Division = about 88 recruits so not sure what that would equate to in "Army-speak"

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

  • Eric Mount

Tony BZ to your sailor!!!!! What division?
  • Marco Mattucci

Congratulations Tony and congratulations to your son.

  • Eric Mount

I know SEALS are being issues the g shock now. We bought my daughter a ladies one right before she shipped.
  • Eric Mount

Seals are the only ones who get watches issues
  • Rick Binkley

The g shock is a great choice and evidently well made. You can spend $30 to $400 on them. I bought one for my son almost 2 yrs ago and he is still wearing it. Just keep it black in color and he'll have no issues.
  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

was going to say...keep it low key, keep it black and remember it will be used at work......

  • Chris

I have the same question as Tony.  I would like to get my son something that he could keep/use when he goes to A school.  I don't know what would be an authorized item would be in A school.

  • Joseph Cavallo

The rule is that you can't leave anything with them at PIR but you can ship things to A-School after they are there and settled. I shipped my son his watch, computer, civilian clothes, etc. The watch is a nice gift and I am sure it will be appreciated. You may have to give it to him at PIR, take it back and then mail it in a few days.
  • Navy Dads Co-Admin Tom

Chris....an engraved Challenge coin is always a nice idea. You can choose a Rating or other coin from those available. Many of us have started this and added to the collection as our Sailors progress...

  • Chris

Great Ideas, thank you.  I guess A school is not as strict as boot camp and is more like a campus?

  • Rick Binkley

Unless its changed drastically in the last 18 months, your sailor will be able to wear a watch after PIR. The restrictions pertain primarily to electronics as to what can be taken back to their ship. If you meet your sailor at the airport before their departure, you can pass on their electronics. and if you meet your sailor before departure you can get a gate pass to wait with them before flying out. The USO can assist if need be. Chris, your sailor will have different phases as to how much freedom they have. Its called phasing up. Best of luck to your sailor....and you!

  • Joseph Cavallo

Chris, my son is in A-School in San Antonio. It's grueling and strict, but he has had some freedoms to go off base to the mall or even a rodeo. He is allowed civilian clothes at certain times. We didn't overload him like college dorm because at the end in June, he needs to transport it or ship it back to us. So we were trying to keep him to a few essentials and comforts.

Rick is correct, after PIR my son flew to A-School at 3pm Saturday. He was taken to the airport at 5am that morning so he had all day to wait. He checking in with the USO and then came and met us at the ticket Counter. They gave us temporary passes to go into the consourse. So we went through security and spent the day with him just chatting, walking the airport, lunch and meeting some of the other sailrors. It was really nice and made the departure fairly easy on the emotions after only seeing him a little bit on Friday.
    Good Luck.

ship 04 div 811 PIR 03/28/2014 has any body herd how battle station went.

  • Alex

I'm sure the calls are coming tonight, The Navy knows that most parents work and it will difficult to get a hold of us during the day. My son is in Division 120 so I assumed,  119 and 120 were the first ones to go. I will  post something as soon as I hear please do the same

  • Mike J Johnson

    Thanks Alex. Yes Sir.

  • Alex

My son just called, I got the "I'm SAILOR" call. I couldn't be a prouder father. Congratulations to all

  • Joseph Cavallo

Congratulations!  It's a wonderful feeling when that call comes in and even better at PIR. Cherish it.

  • Mike J Johnson

    That's great news

Congrats to your Sailor, and his Navy Dad!

Accidentally erased my last post so let's try again. I attended my daughters PIR this weekend and I can say it was one of the most moving experiences for me. If it all possible make sure you go see your kids. Here are the things I learned while I was there

#1. Use and abuse every piece of information in this site. Great resources from the folks that have been there done that. Made me feel like an expert!!!!

#2 don't know if I would do Midway again, but I am a cheapskate and Southwest doesn't fly into O'Hare.

#3 I rented a car. Proved easier for me

#4 stayed at Residnece Inn. Very nice close to Sarge's meet and greet. They take care of the sailors and the families. Few minutes from base and base is easy to get to if you follow the cheat on how to beat traffic. It will save about an hour.

#5 Sarge's meet and great.......just do it period. Great time good info (although if you have done your homework here it is mostly just a repeat). Got info for the best dining experience here

6# food. EVERYONE here loves your sailor and is proud of what they are doing for our country. Sailor's food prices are reflected accordingly. Make sure you tip accordingly. We had dinner at Lovell's of Lake Forest. It is owned by Capt. James Lovell of Apollo 13 fame. It is high end steakhouse. Expect to pay $80 plus a person but it is worth it. The best steak I have ever had!!!!! Impeccable service and filled with Naval Aviation and NASA memorabilia. Capt. Lovell is a proud US Naval Aviator and lives his sailors.

#7. This is more personal but think it is good advice. If you are divorced and your ex is going be sure to play nice for the sake of your sailor. What worked for me was lunch and dinner with the ex and our sailor. Since my ex was going to be with her at O'Hare and I was flying out of midway I took our daughter to my hotel for a few hours to get some one on one time. Worked out great. Sailor was able to call step family with no "awkward" feelings anywhere. Again worked in iur situation. I did see one lady who doesn't get along with her ex so she had difficult time. I don't know the dynamics of the relationship and not going to pretend to do so. So if possible play nice for your sailor.

It was a great trip and I would have loved to see more of Chi Town but schedule didn't allow it. My little girl is now a strong independent woman who is loving navy life. If any of you have questions feel free to shoot me a message.
  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

Your point #7 needs to be taken to heart by all dealing with divorce and separation issues.   Though my two sailor's mom and I are also divorced, we sat together as a family, ate together, and planned for liberty time together.  Remember your sailors call your former spouse mom or dad so cowboy up, act civil, and GET ALONG for your sailor's sake.  And give your sailor some time alone with their mom or dad....they deserve it and regardless of your family situation, they are just as proud of what your sailor has accomplished as you are. Thanks for posting that Eric!!!!

  • NavyDads Co-Admin, Gary

Hey Eric Congrats! Thanks for sharing your PIR experience and tips! And as a divorced parent myself like Paul, #7 is a big one as some folks unfortunately will tend to use this happy occasion and turn it into an ugly one. Tell me more about the steak at Lovell's sounds really good! heheh...
