    How RTC takes these photos:

We take informal division photos during the beginning of each division's training and then post the photos during their fourth week of training.

  • RTC has indicated that there will be gate construction that will affect the route used to access RTC on PIR days. They have posted a map at:

    RTC Gate Impact & Map

Those of us going to see our newly minted Sailors in the next 8 weeks should make sure we know how we are getting to RTC on those Friday (or in my case Thursday) mornings. In this case, that would be almost all of us I think.

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

We ALWAYS recommend you take a taxi or shuttle to PIR and avoid the traffic

  • Oh, I plan to take the hotel shuttle. I don't mind Los Angeles traffic, but in a different city, not so much. Our hotel has a shuttle, and there is always Sarge's taxi service as well.

  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

I've driven in a bunch of places in the US on both coasts and trying to get into and out of RTC for PIR is a different animal.....the shuttle is a good way to go!

Morning! Where can I find info on adopting a Sailor for PIR/Liberty weekend?
  • NavyDads CoAdmin Jim Gramza

Good morning Lori! If you are also going to be at Great Lakes for your own sailor's PIR, all your sailor has to do is bring someone along. There is no special sign out or anything of that nature on PIR weekend.

John...He will spend the first few days filling out paperwork and going through medical /dental testing (P-Days). You will receive a form letter in about 10 days that will have his address and Divisional information...as well as his PIR date. It will also have a password to download a Gate pass for PIR and information for local hotels. HOLD ONTO THIS!!!!!

  • John Alan DeMarco

Okay thanks for the information. I appreciate it. It relieves the uncertainty to kind of know what is going on.
  • Navy Dads Co-Admin Tom

That's why we are here, my friend! You keep asking and we will keep offering answers....LOL!

  • Sean Kelly

For some reason I have never attempted to block emails from this group. I haven't visited here in a long time, however. So, here I am a couple of months after my son's re-enlistment. He is currently serving with a fighter squadron on board a carrier involved in a mission called inherent resolve. Since I visited here last, he married and has two beautiful daughters who are now 1 month into his second deployment.
I just wanted to drop in and let the parents of new recruits who are just entering the navy, that your life has changed. Much of what is now unknown to you will grow into an enormous pride that, at least for me, was never experienced before.
I must tell you, however, your child that just left for boot camp, will never return. That child you sent off just a short time ago, will return home as a grown man or woman that has a new mature outlook on life. I can't thank the US Navy enough for the man my son has become.
Congratulations to all of you. This time in boot camp may seem like forever. But, it is only the beginning of a new a wnderful experience for you and your sailor!
    Best wishes and God Bless,
    Sean
  • Navy Dads Co-Admin Tom

Very nicely put, Sean! Amen to that!

  • PZP'sDAD

Yesterday was 1 year since watched my son swear in and watched him ride up the escalator at the airport to start his new life as a United States Sailor. This first 8 weeks will be a little rough but the changes in these young men and women is amazing .Sean said it perfectly. Congratulations to you all and god bless you and your future sailors.

I don't see div 800 are their pics not posted?
  • Stephen King

Ginger they did post some 800 division. what Division are you looking for?

  • Ginger

Not sure he is only on day 4
  • Stephen King

the informal division pictures are posted on there week 4-1. so you still have a few weeks to go.

  • Ginger

Oh cool something to look forward to! Thank you!
  • John Alan DeMarco

I have another question. On here the training schedule shows 8 weeks. But I read anther site that processing does not count towards week one. Which is it?
  • John Alan DeMarco

Thanks Sean for posting your comments. It is very encouraging. I realized today the kids are fine it is the parents that are coping.
  • Stephen King

i can only tell you what my wife has told me. i could be wrong. Navy has 7 weeks of training, but with processing weeks it makes 8 weeks of training. but a lot of things could happen to make it longer. my wife will be there for a total of 9 weeks due to a processing hold. this is what my wife has told me so.

  • John Alan DeMarco

Thanks Stephen. I should just wait and see. It's hard to be patient these first few days but I am trying ; somehow trying to find out everything I can somehow makes me feel a little better about the fact I know very little. If I will settle in for the ride it will be better on me. I m sure it is hard on
you too. I appreciate her service and your support.

There are occasions when a division may fill and a few unplaced recruits remain. Those "leftover" recruits will be placed as the first recruits for the following division. There are also times that a division is not quite filled with the normal 88 recruits and that division must wait for the next group arriving in Great Lakes to fill to division compliment. When a division is held waiting to fill the division with the next group of arriving recruits, they will placed in what is called a PUSH Division.
Because that division formed "late" it is composed of recruits arriving typically over two different weeks. Some of the recruits in that division will be at RTC for 7 1/2 weeks (8 Fridays) rather than the typical 8 1/2 weeks (9 Fridays) that most of the divisions in that TG (Training Group). To stay current with the projected PIR date for the TG, that division is "pushed" thru some accelerated training- hence the term PUSH division.
This may happen more often for those recruits arriving at the beginning of a week. Recruits who are unlucky enough to be held over may be placed in a TG for the following week. These recruits are at RTC 9 1/2 weeks (10 Fridays). That happens more frequently for recruits arriving at the end of the week. This happens more around holidays or when there is a week without a PIR. Weather or severe storms may result in extra recruits being shipped to RTC when others are delayed. This may also occur if a large number of recruits are shipped to RTC in the summer and early fall due to enlistments that happen during a high school student's senior year.

  • John Alan DeMarco

So I guess basically you will have a better idea when you get that letter with their PIR date as to how they fell with their unit being made up based off their arrival. And of course factors could effect the PIR date.
  • NavyDads Admin (Paul)

Exactly...always wait for that letter.....you can estimate but you can see things can be flexible and until final division assignments are made at RTC there is no firm PIR date

  • jerry darrow

19 days in and we got our first letter from travis says it is really tough but he is making it thru. we were really hoping for a phone call today but nothing yet oh well hopefully next weekend

  • Stephen King

It is tough on them, but as for a phone call always have your phone on you and where you can hear it. I got use to getting on a cretin days and then it got changed on me. So just make sure you have your phone on you.
  • Ginger

So if they send their cell phone home
and I've heard there aren't pay phone areas
any more? Then we're do they call from? Collect?
    And what area code?
  • John Alan DeMarco

My son didn't take his phone. He called me from somewhere. It was a 205 area code. I sent a calling card with him. I did assume the calling card # would be in the caller id. Like an 800 #. Where did you hear no pay phones?
  • Navy Dads Co-Admin Tom

There are banks of payphones available at RTC. You are only guaranteed 2 calls....the "I have arrived" and "I'm a Sailor" calls. Anything more is a reward from the RDC's to the Division....

  • Ginger

I read it somewhere on here John, glad I am wrong
Thanks Tom. Do you know the area code?
