No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Paul:
I agree with Rick. The letters and calls WILL come, be patient. My SR is half way through and due to graduate 4/13. We just got his second letter yesterday, and have only had one real phone call besides the " I'm here" call. But man was that call good for the both us! One thing I would suggest is sending him a questionnaire made up of any questions you have for him. You will not get many answers in normal letters he sends. I just got a questionnaire back from our SR, and he loved it! He wants more! Even send along a self addressed stamped envelope to make it even easier for him.
Paul, tell mama not to worry. Those few lines are more than enough to let you know he is safe and ready for what lies ahead. My daughter did her PIR on 3/9. It will be worth the wait and the anxiety. Being a former Army Drill Sergeant I can tell you, and everyone else with sons/daughters in Basic, the most important thing to them are letters, letters, LETTERS! You don't have to write up a story, just so they get something. Tell them the weather, the TV shows, what the dog did today ... anything. Make them light and funny if you can. Use WORDPERFECT then you can insert pictures of family and such. In no circumstances should you tell them anything negative of how you or others feel about their decision. Support them 100%+. they have enough on their minds without parents, friends or others adding to them. If you don't get any mail for a while, so be it. They have limited time to wirte and are trying to learn to come together as a unit. The old adage of "No news is good news" rings true. When they get time they will write. And that goes for phone calls as well. The weeks will go by quickly as long as you keep those letters coming in. Have your church write, school, Boy Scout Troop, anyone! Hang in there mom. Your son is in a different world and trying to adjust. He can do it with your support.
Hey Mike welcome. My SR's PIR is also 05/11/12. My SR is on Ship 09 Div 144 though. We received his form letter yesterday and my wife was a little sad. She thought there would be some sort of message or something from our son but there was none. I have found this to be a great site for information on what to expect and what our young adults are going through. There are tons of great people on here so feel free to ask anyone if you have questions.
We attended our daughter's PIR & Graduation on 16 March. Needless to say, our pride runneth over. Now she is on to Pensacola for A school.
I plan to write up a brief synopsis of our trup and post it for anyone who is planning to go in the future. This one was a bit unusual in that it was a GRADZILLA with 14 Divisions (almost 1100 Sailors) Graduating. The best general advice I can give to anyone going is to plan your trip in advance and don't wait until the last minute. We started our planning and reservations as soon as we got the "form letter" and everything went smoothly. Some other people waited until almost the last minute and paid dearly for airline tickets and didn't get the exact hotel room they wanted.
All in all... GREAT TRIP!
what base closure? If you are talking RTC, it is a cloased base and the only access to civilians is to PIR and the chapel with PIR graduates.
Noli perspirare -- as my 30 year lifer aunt said.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
More wisdom teeth pulled than U& can count. One day SIQ -- nah nothing.
I think I remember my daughter had such done sometime.
no biggie.
Probably what worries us is the remembering losing the milk teeth all that long ago.
They big kids now.
Thanks for the info, it really helps to hear from others that have been through the same experience. My son started boot March. He is in Div 133 Ship 11. He started boot 12 days after his older sisters PIR.
It did not change my son's PIR
Steve If I remember correctly my son said 1 day was all he had to recoup then it was right back to training.
We had a treat yesterday, My daughter made a surprise visit from a-school, while eating lunch, our son made a call from boot camp! That was the most enjoyable lunch I've ever had!!
I do have a question, My son told us that he was going to have his wisdom teeth pulled. Does anyone know how long that will keep him in his rack? Will it affect his PIR?
