Navy Dads

My son is on this aircraft, it is his first deployment so he didn't know much about life on the ship before he left. talked to him on Sunday and they were boarding and after that nothing. Any idea does he have a email access or when can I expect to hear from him? I know that he is busy and got lots to learn and do now, but I am wondering if I should look for email or text or something from him. God bless them all

Unless in port about the only comms will be email and that can be spotty when at sea. Give him some time to settle in and get into a routine and I'm sure you'll hear from him......

Thank you so much. I was thinking that is going to be some time before I hear from him but with him being the first one from my family to join there is so much that I have no clue about so I have to bug you guys with my questions. thank you for being here for me and helping

Remember that there are no foolish questions....only foolish answers!  We've all had to learn this at some point so don't feel badly about being "the new kid in school". Give him some time to get into a routine and you'll hear from him I'm sure.

To use a lame pun, we are in the same boat. our son will be joining the R.R. In about a week , after he finishes his orientation. We talked to him the day he arrived using FaceTime. After that first conversation, we have heard nothing. We checked with TMobile and we can send unlimited text for no cost but still we have heard nothing. Any ideas?

What I've learned is that when they're on the ship we can only email and that is pretty much regularly almost every day. When ship pulls in to the port somewhere we can FaceTime (we also have T-Mobile) but when they come back "home" to the base that is whole different story. We talk and fb message and Facetime often. Then it comes the time when they getting ready for deployment again and they get busy so there is less talk but I've learned to accept that. No matter where they are, ship or base Navy comes first I've learned to live with that also. Hope this helps, sorry just woke so I'm still kind of fuzzy, but wanted to respond ASAP.

Get used to periods of no comms- my sailors have done three cruises and you get used to it.  Email is limited by available bandwidth and if Navy business consumes all the available bandwith then email shuts down.  Email will also be shut down for security purposes at times....my son went three weeks once under River City 1 conditions and no email....get used to it....The RR is fairly new- there may be more comms available, but be aware and don't expect it to be like being in A-school

And realize that phones are limited by signal strength and only work in port or within a couple of miles of a cell repeater.....that may be changing on the Zumwalt class but it'll take time to trickle down to other classes of ships if at all.

My daughter was deployed on the Carl Vinson for 10 months in the Persian Gulf. Port calls are when they will get in touch with you. Face Time or Skype is the way to go. It is difficult, but the Captain would post weekly on the Vinson Facebook page to keep the families updated. Find the RR Facebook page and join it.
