Happy to report we got the letter today - our SR is on ship 13 (Marvin Shields) div 124.

We are very glad to now have his mailing address and can start planning for the trip to PIR (from Florida).

Looking forward with anticipation - cheers!

We booked our flights this weekend, flying into Milwaukee. As of today our plan is to rent a car, drive to Waukeegan and make camp at the Courtyard Mariott there, which appears to be a stone's throw from Sarge's meet and greet.

From there it is an easy drive down to hit the gate using the Buckley Avoidance maneuver (TM). Love all the great advice on NavyDads.com.

Question: is there fun to be had with our sailor on liberty that doesn't require going toward Chicago? Thanks all.

We stayed there when our daughter graduated....take a right out of the parking lot and you will literally see Sarge's place. There is a big WalMart plaza directly across the street where you can get whatever you may need! There are several restaurants right there as well for breakfast and dinner. Bring some swim trunks for the pool and hot tub. They also have a Meet & Greet for all the Navy parents right at the hotel in the restaurant/bar! It was about a 15 minute drive using the direct route. Plug the Ohio St gate into your GPS if you have one as there are multiple gates for the base...several of which I visited on my journey...LOL!

Our son left last week for RTC. We are anxious to get letter so that we can write him. Glad to hear that others are receiving their letters. That means ours can't be too far behind. We're ready to start planning our trip to PIR also (from S.C.). Thoughts and prayers to all your families

Our SR was able to call his valentine on Saturday, so through her we learned he was doing very well so far after a tough first couple weeks. She said he sounded very upbeat and enthusiastic, which was great to hear. He has been getting our letters, but can only write on Sunday. We should get a letter soon and hopefully we'll get the next phone call!
