No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

To my Dad friends.  My daughter did it.  She didn't get to participate in the official ceremony but she did it.  After numerous calls and many messaging with the admins on here without an official answer,  I decided I would leave on faith anyway.  My older son, her Grandma and her Grandpa took our chances and drove 1430 miles in hopes that she would be granted liberty.  We didn't know for certain until Thursday sometime I believe about 4.  Maybe we had made to Des Moines by then.  We went through pouring down rain through Nebraska, tons of road construction almost everywhere and made it here late Thursday night about 1030.  We watched the streaming video here at the Ramada on Friday morning.  A big thank you to DIV 307 for accepting her as a member of your team during Battlestations.  The staff here have been very helpful and polite.  I still don't have official answers for the admins as to what would normally? happen in a situation like this but I am here.  I am spending time with my new sailor.  Picked her up Friday afternoon and took her to get a pedicure at a place called CaliNails that is by a Ross store.  She loved it.  You know because of the blisters.  Then went to the Sams club so she could stock up on her food stuff.  Then went to Outback and she got to eat a steak.  You guys all do an amazing job.  Any new moms that join up - friend me and I will share my experience with you as well.  My last 8 weeks of it anyway.

Time definitely does fly by. I have two sons in the Navy. I just heard from the youngest boy that he is officially an ET today after finishing A School. He has orders to San Diego for C School. His older brother is a nuke ET going through prototype in Goose Creek. He's coming up on his two year mark in November.

We went through the same anxiety when the boys left for boot camp. The time will fly by and you'll see your "kids" again before you know it. You might even look back a year or two from now and wonder what all the fuss was about. Nah, probably not.

Hang in there and thanks to all of your kids for their service.

Chis H. Well written brother. We haven't gotten our first "real" letter yet, but I know when it comes, I'll be a blubbery mess. It was hard enough just seeing her handwriting on the form letter. And Stephanie, you are absolutely right about this community. Just reading about what others are going thru is a tremendous help. None of us are in this alone. Just as much as the Navy is preaching "family" to our SR's right now, it's awesome to see that that mentality extends well beyond the Sailors IN the Navy, but to their "real" families outside of it. Sitting back not being able to have any control on when I hear from her is really difficult, for both me and my wife. But, as hard as it is, it is good. For for my daughter in learning and finding her way, and good for me in helping me release my grip on her. *sigh* *smile* *tear*

Congrats to all those at PIR today. I remember it like it was yesterday. What a huge life changing moment for you and your sailor! Enjoy the experience, and keep in mind, hurry up and wait.

My son had his two year anniversary yesterday. The good thing about him leaving on my birthday is now he remembers it!

He definitely is seeing things and places he never would have had the chance to see otherwise.

Jerri: I don't know if you travel with your computer, but we're praying you get to see your SAILOR at PIR tomorrow.  Please let us know how it goes.  Congrats as well, Ken.  Enjoy your time with your new SAILOR.

Stephanie, we are in Great Lakes tonight waiting on PIR tomorrow morning. I do remember the waiting you are talking about. Everyday coming home looking for the box and waiting on the letter. I can remember the first time he called I was so excited. Just write your Recruit every chance you get. They really appreciate it. He actually wrote back a lot more than I expected and I think it helped me as much or more than my letters helped him. Hang in there, I know it seems like a long time but it does pass fairly quickly. Go Navy!!!

Echo.  Echo.  Stephanie:  I don't remember how long we waited for the first letter or the Kid in a Box, or even her letters to come in from our daughter, but I do remember I called my wife at work and she wanted me to read it.  Read it?  I couldn't see the page, and even if I could have seen through the tears I was shaking too badly to focus.  We still feel the pride as parents for each family on Fridays, having experienced it.  We knew beforehand she couldn't wave to us or turn her head as her unit marched by, but we detected the dimple she gets in her cheek when she's smiling even without opening her mouth.  And that was more than three years ago.  Sniffle.
