Iwo Jima

Posted on March 5, 2010 at 4:50pm 1 Comment

My sailor (Kevin) serving aboard the USS Tortuga had the rare privilege of visiting Iwo Jima as part of the 65th Anniversary celebration on February 25th. While he wasn't able to attend the ceremony (he was pulling road guard duty) he did get to see a lot of sights and catch a glimpse of some of the dignitaries in attendance including the Secretary of the Navy.

What really struck me was when he told me about this was his encounter with a WWII vet of the Battle of Iwo Jima. My…

Well, Kevin has been gone almost 2 months now and is still somewhere on the open sea. I don't even think he knows exactly where he is. Since leaving Australia, the phone calls have stopped and the emails aren't as frequent and are shorter in length. He said he had been assigned to a "Tiger Team" and they were fixing various things on the ship that required attention. Seems strange for an IT to be doing this, but the big advantage is he is gaining first hand knowledge of the entire ship. He said… Continue

Sailing the Sea

Well, it has been a little over 4 weeks since Kevin shipped out. Since then, he has already been in Okinawa and is now on his way to Australia. He said there would be stops along the way, but he can't tell me where he is at this time nor when he will be in Australia. Sunday was not an easy day as this was the first Father's Day he wasn't home. He was thoughtful enough to leave a gift for me with my wife. Kevin and I visit Barnes and Noble at least once a month and this year, he got me a gift… Continue

Finally in Japan!

Posted on May 27, 2009 at 9:21pm 0 Comments

After a 3-week leave upon completing A-school, my son Kevin left North Carolina on Sunday to join the crew of the USS Tortuga in Sasebo Japan. To say it was hard to say good-by is an understatement. It is one thing to send your son to Illinois, but to send them to Japan was a lot harder than I imagined. He had a grueling trip, which included a 14-hour flight from Atlanta to Seoul, South Korea. Jet lag did catch up with him and his LCPO allowed to take a nap on his first day on board, which… Continue

Question, What are you and Kevin doing for communication i assume Email,Do they have access to computers on board or did Kevin take his own? I'm glad Kevin's enjoying himself. Do you know Marcie Dunn? I used to be in CSC customer service tech support, and Marcie and I would help each other. I have 16 counties in the Triad area that I service plus all of Novant professional staff.

Lee, Welcome Aboard!. I found navyformoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud navy dads just like myself. Thank your son for his service for me and thanks again for joining. Sincerely, EG

Welcome to NavyDads Lee! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric is almost two months into a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat just returned from her seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Lee this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Kevin is doing!

As a parent of a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what your son or daughter is going through. Thanks to one of our members we have two excellent videos that you access can from the NavyDads.com main page: New Bootcamp 1 of 2 and New Bootcamp 2 of 2. These videos will answer many of your questions and concerns and will give you a better understanding of how the United States Navy transforms our children into sailors!

Be sure to spend some time in the Bootcamp group- there are many questions and answers available to help you understand what your sailor is going through. And as PIR draws closer, be sure to spend some time going through the PIR-Tips, Hints and Helps group- we’ve tried to assemble some tips and suggestions to make your sailors PIR more enjoyable. Best Regards- Paul
