From RTC:
Each year, Recruit Training Command conducts the Adopt-A-Sailor program at Thanksgiving and Christmas which offers families of the senior-most divisions to spend the day with them off base, within 50 miles. Recruits whose families cannot be not present will be adopted by local civic organizations such as VFWs, American Legions, churches, etc. No recruit in Training Group 4 will be left behind.
This year for Thanksgiving, the eligible recruits are Training Group 4 with a Dec. 2 graduation. The recruits were given an application form to send home, which must be completed and faxed back to our Public Affairs office by Nov. 1.
Only one form per recruit is mailed to whichever family member they choose. The recruits are allowed to bring along one recruit from their Training Group, and they must provide the name of that recruit to whomever they mail the form.
***Please do not contact us to request a form as only your recruit is permitted to send one.***
Only immediate family members are eligible to adopt their recruit, including: parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. Girlfriends, boyfriends and fiancés are not eligible and their application will be denied. If they wish to adopt their recruit, they will need to accompany the eligible family member who completes the application form.
We do understand that not all families will be able to make the additional trip prior to graduation, so rest assured those recruits without families will enjoy a day with the organizations who provide them with a holiday feast, phone usage, access to computers, games and movies.
