A very worthwhile exhibit while you are touring the area after your sailor's PIR is a tour of U-505 at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry Link to the Exhibit U-505 is the only U-boat in the USA. The capture of the sub is an amazing story, and has been featured on the Discovery Channel. Over the past few years, the exhibit has been remodeled and in touring it you get a real sense of the terror that the Wolfpack inflected in the North Atlantic during the early days of WWII. I could only imagine what being part of a convoy must have been like while being hunted. If you are interested, contact the museum and make reservations as the tours are very limited in size. You will be amazed at how tight the quarters were and thought of sailing the North Atlantic during winter gives you another perspective to the battle. The museum itself is an awfuly interesting place in it's own right, and they do have underground parking in the building. If you're on a tight budget, check prices!
