Another question I have is when my son went to boot camp we sent him stationary to write with but he sent it back with his back pack. Not sure why it didn't stay with him.
Do I need to send him stationary to write home or does the Navy furnish it?
We also forgot to send him a phone card so I plan to send him one. He is just starting week 3 so I assume it will be a little bit before he can make his first call. We just received his letter late last week and his box of stuff the week before.

JoDean,
You will definately get 3 phone calls. When they arrive at boot camp, at the middle of boot camp and last call will be to tell you they will be graduating. Not heard of many people getting extra calls besides those three. For us it took about 1 1/2 till we received his box of personal belongings then about 4 days later we received the letter showed what ship and div he was in for the address so you could right him. Some families have gotten their kids stuff earlier and within a day of each other. Once you have the address from the letter you can start writing her. Our son has just pasted his midway point so received his second call and received two letters. Hope this helps.
I read that they could bring a calling card for emergencies only. My daughter left June 13th so I was assuming they really never get to call home, except when they arrive.
No Kathy. My son graduates 7/08. Just a week earlier. For some reason it took awhile to get my son's stuff. I was over a week later we got his letter.
Hi Jason, I am wondering if your son's boot camp graduation is on 7/15 ? My son's is and it sounds like we are receiving his box of belongings and the form letter at the same time.
Thanks for the response. The recruiter said he could take stationary to write with but it was sent home. Even the Navy website for boot camp has a list of stuff he can take to boot camp. Stationary and write utensils are one of them. They need to change it to they can not bring anything at all. When I saw the youtube video of boot camp arrivals it looks like they do not keep one thing that is personal and send everything home. I figured that was going to happen.
The Navy provides stationary. Recruits write on Sundays and you should receive the first letter around Week 4. You can send him a phone card, but be aware that you get the "I have arrived "call and the "I am a Sailor" call. Any other call is by the discretion of the RDC and is a reward for Divisional success....
