My son is to graduate from bootcamp March 8th. Anyone know where I could get a room cheap, and how far is the base from the airport, and what about transportation? My funds are a little low.

There are a few places to get pizza in Chicago that are well known. The original Pizzeria Uno is downtown and very good, but there are Uno's everywhere. Also, Giordano's is a famous place to go. We went to the Silo which is close to the base and much easier to get to. The Silo is very good and they will give your sailor a free appetizer and thank him for serving, which the first time they get this is a big deal.
FWIW, the drive from Milwaukee is a bit further, but not nearly as much traffic. However, either drives are not too bad.
I would base my hotel selection on depending if your sailor will be staying in GL afterwards or not. If he's shipping out that night, staying at a hotel with a shuttle works out fine. However, if he's staying in Great Lakes, staying at the Navy Lodge is convenient because it's a very short drive and you'll be making it a few times over the weekend and on very short notice.
Definitely planning on attending the meet and greet. The meet and greet location is very close to our hotel. My wife and I are really looking forward to going!!
Sorry to say that Milwaukee didn't occur to me either. I've already purchased our tickets for O'hare on April 25th. Also booked Courtyard by Marriott for hotel rooms and I was told by the hotel to wait until we get there to set up transportation to PIR via the shuttle. Really hoping this is a good idea. I hate waiting until the last minute to do things.
Cubs are actually playing the Brewers in Milwaukee that weekend. Might see if we can make it to that! I talked to a co worker from Chicago and he told me I HAVE to go to Unos pizza in Chicago on Ohio street. Best pizza in town.
Ronald, if you've got some extra days, you definitely will not want to hang around the Great Lakes area. When did you say you were in town? Might want to try for Cubs tickets. Not a more enjoyable ballpark anywhere. If the weather is nice, there's a pretty fun bike tour around downtown Chicago and Navy Pier. Also, the Fields Museum is great as well. Or go up to the glass floor elevator!
Chicago is a great city to spend time in. Some great places to eat as well. Good luck!
