  • Thank you all for your answers, very helpful.
  • Our daughter left for MA A-School the day after PIR. We met her and spent the morning and afternoon visiting at the airport. You can get a Gate Pass at the Check-In desk to accompany your Sailor to the gate.

  • Hi Don,

It depends on the "A" school location.

My daughter's "A" school was there on the older part of the Great Lakes campus. She had a few days off between graduation and the beginning of her "A" schooling.

One of her friends was leaving the next day before being shipped out to San Diego.  Those in the class going to Pensacola had only a few hours before the flight south. One of the "hosts" at the grad ceremony said his family would meet him in FL as he was going to Pensacola.

As I recall, your recruit will know a few weeks ahead of graduation the location of the "A" school and then you can make plans. It may be less costly to visit your shipmate in "A" school due to its location compared to Chicago.

    Good luck!!

  • a few may leave on Sunday.....now they may be on hold at A-school for a while until classes actually start, but that will NOT be leave time

  • Thank you Paul. Just to be sure, is that always the case? I believe my son's recruiter mentioned a month in between. Must have been bad info.
  • They will have PIR on Friday and leave for A-school on Saturday
