Boot Camp Graduation

My Grandson is graduating boot camp this Friday June 1st and myself, my wife and his parents will be traveling from Southern California to Great Lakes for the ceremony.  I got a lot off the Navy site but is there more that I might need to know regarding the graduation?

We are renting a car at Ohare and driving to our hotel next to the base, the Marriot courtyard.  Should we drive to the base the morning of or take the shuttle?  Are there better seats than others?  Where should we take him for his time with us, some have mentioned the Navy Pier.   Any other bits of advise from those who have recently experienced this MOMENTOUS event.  I graduated back in 1964 but I imagine it changed a bit. YOU THINK?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

  • I would take the shuttle, but that is a personal decision....there will be sign indicating what division will be where...the bleachers are not steep and are generally packed- I took the back row for both my PIRs figuring I could stand on the bleachers and not block anybodies view. My advice...don't plan on things to do until you see your sailor...they may just want to take a hugely long hot shower, eat pizza and kick back and watch some movies...............
