Car Insurance

Question for any of my fellow Navy Dads from New Jersey.   My son has his driver's lics, but doesn't own a car.   Did you have to keep your child on your car insurance?    If he had a car, i understand you have to.  But, if he only has his licenses and won't really be around to drive one of your cars.  what did you do?

  • Our son just got his license. Will be on our insurance till he goes to boot camp, at which point we will drop him. He won't be needing or even able to drive for at least 6 months. At that point he will get his license switched to South Carolina and get his own insurance after he has purchased his first car. If he comes home on leave before that happens, we can either add him back on or just do all the driving for him. We are in Illinois. Laws vary by state so it's worth checking with your insurance agent and or DMV just to verify what your options are.
  • We took our son off of our insurance. Once he left for boot camp, we knew he wouldn't be driving any of our vehicles again. Once he got to his first duty station, he bought his own vehicle.
