Clothing Allowance

My son is about to go on his first deployment and just called to say he had to spend most of his paycheck to load up on clothing and supplies for the next 6 months. I thought the military provided a clothing allowance. Do our sailors have to buy all of their work clothing themselves?

  • All...Thanks for the discussion.  I don't remember having to consider this sort of thing when I was a sailor back in the late 60s early 70s.  Maybe I did pay for uniforms, but I sure don't remember having to do so.  Things change.

On a related topic...I recently heard that military enlisted personnel are required to pay a monthly allotment for meals.  True??

  • the uniform thing can be a pain....especially when the Navy decides to change everything like they have over the past 2 years....it costs our sailors a lot of "chedda" like my son says.....

  • Paul, thanks for the explanation. Hopefully the Navy will continue to reinforce what we've been trying to teach my son for years about the value of a $ and the importance of managing his money — among many other things. I can honestly say that I've already seen a new maturity level in him in just four months since he left home.

they get an allowance, but is does not cover most uniform costs......the 2012 men's E1-E6 total seabag price is $ 1697.30.  Basic annual replacement allowance is given to members with up to three years on active duty while those who have completed three years of service receive the standard allowance.  Standard replacement allowance is $ 482.40 and basic replacement allowance is $338.40.  From NavyTimes 7 Nov. 2011

  • @Robert, Thank you for your reply.

  • @Mark, They will not see much money in boot, after uniform costs, pictures ect. it seems the Navy keeps most of the money. Not to worry they have no need for it, uniform allowance will be reimbursed later. It all works out.

  • My son is in GL now for boot camp, when dose the allowance being deducted from their pay check?
