This may sound like a cop-out.....but the only honest answer is going to be "it depends on the command". Currently my son is working 12+ hour shifts and the only thing he wants to do on a day off is catch up on sleep/laundry if he doesnt catch duty. He live off base in an apartment, so he pretty much goes home everyday though. I know there are travel restrictions as far as how many miles from base they can go without prior aproval from their chain of command, but again it depends on the command and duty needs. While he was in A/C school they kept a very short chain on the students, so as to maximize study time.
