Entering as E2 or E3

There a quite a few things that may allow SRs to enter the Navy as E2 or E3, as opposed to E1.  For example, they may have ROTC experience, college credits, Eagle Scouts, etc.

Does anyone have any idea of what percentage of SRs enter the Navy as E2s or E3s?

Are SRs who enter RTC as E2 or E3 treated any differently than E1s (either good or bad) by the RDCs or other SRs?

  • Thanks Kris - exactly what I was hoping/looking for! He does have it in his contract so his experience should be the same. Thanks again!

my son just graduated from boot camp. He went in as E-3 and received the pay that e-3 gets. he received the insignia (ie Stripes) after battle stations. The 3 stripes are on their dress blues at PIR .

Check the contract that was signed upon entry it will list rate.

  • I remember talking to my daughter after her PIR (@ 3.5 years ago), she said she didn't make E-3 because she didn't do well enough on the firing range, & didn't pass that test. She was really disappointed at that time, because she fell just shy of passing. I think she got a 2nd chance too but didn't make it.

  • Greg,

I know this is a few mos down the road, Just to give you a heads up my son WAS paid at th e-3 rate during GL. For the benefit of anyonw else with this problem E-1 E-2 E-3? they should go back to the recruiter who signed them up under their specific contract, we did that and they were able to go to meps to get the grade issue corrected. My son has graduated from HM a school and is now in C school for Med Lab, wasn't his choice but happy he got a C school since his orig orders from A school was to go to Japan!! Initially he was told no A school. He turned in his paper work for Japan to find out in his NIPS file they did put him into a C school. This was in his file for month before he graduated A school talk about confusion. He is having a hard time from the latest e-mail we got with the first course. He said his class is = to 2 classroom of students. He told me they just had an exam and 3/4 of the class failed the test. The next test almost the WHOLE class failed and they didn't have enough room to retest in the classroom they had to use a lab to hold them all. Go figure. Any way didn't mean to drag this out. Hope your sailor is in a more stable situation than mine is now. To my sons credit he is not quitting, he is studying his butt off. This course is 13 mos long so I'll let you know where we are then.

    Frank,

I am following your post and I hope there will be a good outcome for your son.  I am
sure that many others are also pulling for him.

I also trust that sometime after completion of boot camp, his pay issue will be resolved
in his favor.  His pay grade should be listed on his contract.  Showing this contract to
his chain of command should clear up any confusion.

I thank him for his service & wish him the very best of luck.

  • Hi Todd - I realize this post is almost 6 months old but hopefully you or someone that knows may be able to help me out:

My son has E-3 in his contract and we originally understood that it meant he will not wear the rank during training but still receive the pay - yesterday, prior to signing a reclassification a different recruiter stated that "he would only be paid at the E-1 rate throughout training." Do you know if your daughter was paid at the E1 or 3 rate during training?

    Thanks,

    Scott

All the recruits are treated the same. They wear no rate markings (except for the leadership billets (RCPO, RMA, Section Leaders, etc.)).  For those that enter as E-1, there are chanced to advance to E-2 or E-3. My daughter went in as an E-3 because of college, and she was RMA for her division.

Also, not to be picky, but technically they are referred to as recruits, not SR's. SR's are Seaman Recruits (E-1) and is an actual rate. The recruits are not rated until they pass BS and are considered Sailors. Then... they are considered SR's, SA's or SN's (or AR..., CR..., FR..., etc.).

Depending on how they do in A School (and if the A School does it), they have a chance to advance again, even to E-4. My daughter went to MA A School and graduated as a Distinguished Grad, so was eligible to advance in 4-10 months, depending on how she did at her first command. She takes the MA2 test this month. Each A School is different and may not offer the advancement option.

I know a lot of parents don't have any military experience, so I hope you find this helpful.

  • Todd,

Thank you for the reply & clarification.   It is helpful, and I appreciate the details.

Kudos to your daughter for her success.  No doubt she's a bright and ambitious
young woman.   Best of luck on thagt MA2 test!
