Our son has recently earned the ESWS pin. My question is will the Navy automatically provide him with his actual pin, or is this something that he will have to purchase himself?

Yes, he does get one at his ceremony. He'll want to purchase a few more, one for inspections, one just in case ...
Steve, I'm pretty sure he'll be awarded at least one pin for his uniform at a command awards ceremony. If he wants spares he'll probably have to purchase those.
