	Electronics Technician, Submarine, Navigation operators serve on board multiple classes of submarines. Their responsibilities include preparing for and conducting basic submarine navigation and piloting evolutions. Navigation Operators also operate and conduct basic preventive maintenance on interior communications announcing circuits, atmosphere monitoring equipment and ship control subsystems. While at sea, the Navigation Operators will operate and monitor Atmosphere Monitoring systems, Inertial Navigation systems, and Global Positioning Systems under the supervision of senior personnel.

Electronic Technician Navigation (ETV) Submarines serve on board multiple classes of submarines and specialize in navigation systems. They are responsible for electronic equipment used for preparing for and conducting basic submarine navigation and piloting evolutions.

What They Do The duties performed by ETV’s include:

• maintain, repair, calibrate, tune, and adjust all electronic equipment used for navigation;

• operate and conduct basic preventive maintenance on interior communications announcing circuits,

• operate atmosphere monitoring equipment and ship control subsystems.

• use and maintain hand tools and portable power tools;

• operate and monitor Inertial Navigation systems, and Global Positioning Systems under the supervision of senior personnel.

Credit Recommendations

The American Council on Education (ACE) guide recommends that semester hour credits be awarded in the vocational certificate or lower-division bachelor's/associate's degree categories for courses taken in this rating on computer science, marine systems management, computer and information science, and applied electronics, applied mathematics, circuit theory, systems maintenance, and communications.

Qualifications and Interests

Electronics Ttechnicians (ETV) must be U.S. citizens eligible to meet security clearance requirements. Important qualifications include knowledge of arithmetic, capability to understand modern computing devices, the ability to speak and write well, function as a member of a team, do detailed work and keep accurate records. Additionally they must possess some physical strength and good manual dexterity.

Obligation.

Active duty obligation is five years. Applicants will enlist for four years and concurrently execute an agreement to extend their enlistment for one year.

Advancement.

Enlistees enlist as E-1s (seaman recruits). Completion of all advancement-in-rate requirements (including minimum time-in-rate) must be completed prior to advancement to E-2, E-3 and E-4. Top graduates of initial “pipeline” training may elect accelerated advancement to E-4 if they execute an agreement to extend their enlistment one additional year (six years total obligation). Advancement in this field to E-4 (Petty Officer Third Class) is excellent.

Working Environment

ETVs duties are usually performed aboard submarines and usually work indoors in a clean, controlled environment with comfortable temperatures. However, some work is required in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature. Their work may be independent in nature, but they usually work closely with others under direct supervision.

Placement opportunities are good for qualified applicants. About 1,100 Sailors work in the ETV rating.

Navy ETV - Submarine Navigation Manager

Submarine Navigation Managers assess navigation division training, audit navigation division records, coordinate navigation division maintenance, coordinate navigation division equipment modifications, review naval correspondence, develop navigation watch bills, and develop shipboard navigation instructions. Prepare narrative reports of operations/exercises. Evaluate piloting and modified piloting team performance. Monitors maintenance quality control; prepares weekly preventive maintenance schedules; review completed maintenance data forms; supervises the repair of electronic systems and subsystems; uses accounting procedures to maintain control of inventories, work flow; estimates time and support required for repair of equipment, provides technical and supervisory liaison between work centers; implements and administers a maintenance and repair program; prepares quarterly preventive maintenance schedules.

Navy ETV - Submarine Navigation Operator

Submarine Navigation Operators operate electronic equipment used for detection, tracking, recognition and identification, aids to navigation, radar, interior communications, fathometer, voyage management system, alarm, ship's control, entertainment, gyrocompass, piloting, instrumentation and control; operate general purpose test equipment, personal computer, auxiliary equipment; employ navigation rules; stand watch on related equipment. Able to solve ac/dc electronic circuitry involving resistance, voltage, current, capacitance, and inductance; solid state electronics, power supplies, servo-control circuits, navigation chart preparation, stand watch as assistant to officer of the deck and to the navigator, performs navigation; inventories/procures for nautical charts and publications.

Navy ETV - Submarine Navigation Technician

Submarine Navigation Maintenance Technicians maintain and troubleshoot electronic equipment used for detection, tracking, recognition and identification, aids to navigation, radar, interior communications, voyage management system, alarm, warning, ship's control, entertainment, gyrocompass and piloting, and instrumentation and control; perform assigned mission organizational level maintenance and repair of command, and control systems. Analyze navigation exercises; evaluate navigational information. Ability to read and interpret schematics and block diagrams; apply general working knowledge of electricity and electronics to repair electrical/electronic cables and connectors; localizes malfunctions and repairs or replaces faulty parts or subassemblies; aligns, adjusts, calibrates, and performs corrective maintenance on navigation equipment; supervise navigation division maintenance, draft naval messages, develop navigation divisional watch bills, maintain navigation division records, develop navigation division training; and conduct navigation division training. generate a voyage plan; generate current ops; interpret and plot weather and ice message information.
