I have a question about conditions aboard Navy DDGs MY son is stationed aboard DDG 84 and tells me there is no hot water in his berthing area and there is no heat in general and this time of year it's about 50 F. I suggested he check out the other berths on the ship to see if it's localized or a general problem. He's a CS and is required to take daily showers for sanitary reasons, but 3 months of cold showers is getting old. If this is normal I guess it is what it is, but if not who would he report it to and how?

Hello Jonathan! My son is a sonar tech on a destroyer. I know they keep it cold in his general area due to the equipment that is running. Also, when I visited him on ship I did happen to notice that it also stays fairly cool in the berthing area. However, I don't think having access to hot water was ever an issue, so I'd say that is probably not normal. I agree with Jim, just start with the chain of command. Good luck!
Thanks Jim, Just trying to get a feel for what's normal. I assume non critical systems get low priority aboard ship. There seems to be a ventilation system in the berthing area would that normally bring conditioned air in or is it just bringing fresh air.
