I researched the discussions and did not see much on where to stay around Pearl Harbor. There were a couple of discussions talking about Best Western but not much else. My wife and I are going to visit our son in a few weeks who is stationed at Pearl Harbor and will be staying in Hawaii about eight days. He is living off base on what they call the Pearl City Peninsula area. We would like an extended stay place or condo or something with a refrigerator and kitchen and would rather be closer to Pearl City and Pearl Harbor than Honolulu/Waikiki. Any suggestions on where to stay and what neighborhoods are sketchy and to stay away from?

When I was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 2004-2007, there were no hotels on the island outside the confines of Waikiki except for the Navy Lodge on Ford Island. There is the Turtle Bay Resort located closer to the North Shore but good luck getting in there. I don't know if you would have any luck finding a place in Pearl City. I would look at renting a condo in or around Kailua or Kanehoe . The trek to pearl city is about the same as from Waikiki but it's a much prettier drive, especially coming down H-3 from Kanehoe. I would stay away from Waikiki altogether. It's nothing more than a tourist trap. The beaches at the north shore and on the windward side of the island are way better too. Traffic is going to suck no matter where you stay. That's Oahu.
all your sponsor has to do is be present for your check in to verify your eligibility if you do not have a military ID

I am going to tag on to this discussion. I am planning on a TC with my daughter soon on the Makin Island, no dates or paperwork available yet. I was wondering if there is a recommended place to stay in HI. I was looking at the Hale Koa but it doesn't look like I could stay there without a sponsor staying at the same time? Any suggestions on where Tigers usually stay would be appreciated. ~Ken
Pearl City is a mixed residential and industrial area- lot of military housing.....drive to Waikiki isn't too terribly bad...down Nimitz freeway and then towards town, but traffic can be heavy at times. And in all honesty I don't remember many hotels, etc.. in that area.
Hale Koa is unavailable and I really do not have any objection to being in that area but my son lives who is called the Pearl City Peninsula and tells me that the Waikiki area is a 45 minute drive away from him. We're trying to decide whether to stay where there is a lot to do and see like Waikiki or stay near him near Pearl City which some people have told me ismmore industrial and residential. Decisions Decisions. I appreciate your help and that of all the others.
I stayed at the Hale Koa, but tho that is run by Army MWR and has GREAT RATES it is located on Waikiki and you indicate you did not want to be in that area.....you check AirBNB ?
