    Maybe the above was meant for Gary, sorry.  Thought it was Kent.  My blackberry is hard to read sometimes.  :)  On the big computer now.

    No problem Kent, wasn't trying to be argumentative.  Just speaking from my experience in boot camp and my son's as well.  He's in the 6th week and we only got the one call when he arrived.  His letters say he's doing well though.  I guess we'll find out when we get there in a couple of weeks.  Good luck with yours as well.

    You are absolutely right John my apologies. The reply I posted for Kent the quoted source was from N4M.

    RECRUIT STATUS:

    "Recruits are only permitted to make phone calls when their Recruit Division Commanders grant the division permission to do so. Phone calls are not guaranteed; they are a privilege that can be earned or taken away. However, no news is good news as recruits are granted additional phone calls if they are in jeopardy of not graduating (i.e. they are injured, do not pass a test, etc.)."

    I've also read a posting from RTC FB (parent posting) for whatever reason they did not get the "I'm Here" call on day one. Don't know what the cause or result was from that.

    The above statement is false.  There are no such thing as guaranteed calls except for the I'm here call.

    from RTC:

    Every holiday — Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, etc. — we are asked if the recruits will be able to make phone calls home. The answer is no, not all recruits will get phone calls. Some will and that all depends if their RDCs scheduled time at the phone center.

    If you wonder why all the recruits cannot make phone calls, here is an explanation: There is not enough time to accommodate all the recruits in the same day to make phone calls.

    To give you a more detailed explanation, we worked the numbers. Currently, there are about 60 divisions in training. When we take the average number of recruits per division and factor in the six-hour window of opportunity to use the phone center on a holiday, that gives each recruit .081th of a second to make a phone call. That is correct — less than one second.

    So again, the answer is no. Not all the recruits will get to make phone calls on any given holiday.

    I found this info on the web, posted 10/16/2010. Hope this somewhat helps:

    "On Thanksgiving and Christmas recruits are given the morning off to relax, write letters, study or go to church. They return to training after lunch, then get a traditional holiday dinner. The half-day they do spend training doesn't count, they usually spend the day practicing their marching, making beds or having practice inspections.

    Most divisions will NOT get a holiday phone call. Recruits get three "guaranteed" calls, one the night they arrive (the "I'm here" call), one at the end of their third week of training (the "I'm still alive" call) and one after completing Battlestations 21 in their 7th or 8th week (the "I'm a sailor" call). All other calls are earned. If they just happen to earn a call for performance, or one of their scheduled calls happens to fall on Thanksgiving or Christmas, you may get a call. It's rare for a division to earn a call in their first few weeks, so I wouldn't count on a call for Thanksgiving, but Christmas may be possible."

    thanks Gary but that does not answer my question, my son is in neither one of these groups and will have to stay on base I am guessing????? will he be allowed to call home that day???
