Hello, I am new to this forum but wanted to hopefully get some good insight on a few things. I am not a father to someone who is joining the Navy but a father who is joining the Navy. I have a family that I am extremely involved with and dread the day I have to leave for basic. I am an IT contractor as well as an order filler at the Walmart DC, so hard work isn't really an issue. I was curious though, does the Navy act differently with deployments when the sailor has a family?

Deployments are long and the Navy tries to keep morale up as much as possible....This may include USO concerts, BBQ's (steel beach parties on a carrier), and many social activities. Computer access is allowed and helps to keep family close and informed.
Thank you everyone for your response. I have a buddy that is in aviation and is actually on deployment right now... As a matter of fact he just posted a video of him at a tpain concert while on deployment and many other social media postings... This doesn't add up for me, did the military just become extremely lenient?
Best advice is have your family utilize the FRG's and groups like NavyDads for answers and support. Often they just may need to vent....it is normal and that's why we are here....utilize the resources available and there are a number of Facebook groups and other internet sites out there.
The main lesson you will learn is "the needs of the Navy" come first! You will not be treated any differently than the single Sailors. Deployments are difficult on everyone and you can figure on about 2 over your first 4 years...Best of luck!

deployments are tough regardless...if in the fleet you are at sea for 7-8 months- it's part of the Navy journey. There is snail mail and there is email comms....don't expect any preferential treatment just because you have family on land.....most ships have FRGs (Family Readiness Groups) and can give your family support and limited news.
