Memorial Day has a rich history dating back to the end of the Civil War. Read about it here:

In 1971 Congress changed it to a floating date so that Americans could enjoy a 3 day weekend but many feel that it has diminished the true meaning of the holiday. Now it seems people are more aware of furniture sales, BBQ a day at the beach than the true meaning of the holiday to remember are fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen not to mention first responders and firemen who we lost on September 11!

Have you had a family member die in defense of our nation? Check out:

http://www.pbs.org/memorialdayconcert/ and click on Share and Remember where you can share a remembrance or read others. I read some this morning and teared up!

And for those submariners out there please check out:

http://www.oneternalpatrol.com/  a sight dedicated to all men lost while serving in the US Submarine Force.

Have a great weekend with family and friends, grill something on the BBQ, go swimming or and welcome the summer season but please take a moment to remember the true meaning of the holiday!

  • I forgot to add that many towns and cities have cemeteries dedicated to veterans or sections with a cemetery. If you have the chance, take a moment out of your busy weekend and visit one. In Houston where I live the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other volunteers will be busy Saturday putting flags on all graves, it is a beautiful sight.

    Thanks for listening!
