  • Jim, I have a questions for you.  My son scored a 194 on the ASVAB and only qualified for the Rates of BM, AO, CS, and at the time he took the ASVAB also ABE, ABH, ABF.  His disre is to strike for either OS or CTT or CTM.  He missed the OS rate by 24 points based on his line scores.  His desire is to get into the OS or CTT or CTM rate.  Can he still strike for these or does he have to take the ASVAB over again prior to striking for those rates?

Yeah, I see now where you found it. I'm going to take on a project and make sure that our ratings page is up to date. Thanks very much!
  • Jim, the correct website is http://www.navycs.com.  In it you'll find the latest ASVAB requirements that I mentioned.
  • Jim, the rate of BM was changed recently.  Here are the latest ASVAB score requirements foir a BM:

VE+AR+MK+AS=175 or MK+AS+AO=135 mfrom the following website: www.navycs.com/asvab-test.htm!#job-line-scores.  The website is dated 2011.  It's a very good website with more information.

I took my son to Naval Station Mayport and got him a tour of the USS Vicksburg.  Talk about a kid whose eyes opened up like a kid with a lolly pop.  We had a QM2 take us on the tour and gave a stem to stern, port to starboard, bridge to birthing tour.  He explained in detail what would be expected of my son as a BM.  My son loved it and told me he wished he could have gotten into the Navy sooner then waiting a year.

I hope the above website is interesting to you.

Well, I have looked at a couple of sites, and for the life of me I don't see where a BM is required to have an ASVAB score at all. Now if he were going to and aviation BM, then that might be different. Where did you get your information?

I can't answer the question about the helmsman duties, but I'm sure on a ship, they probably have some kind of rotation.
