Hello,

My son has been excited about his career in the Navy, He has a few tattoos, which was a concern when he started the process, The Air Force ok'd them (took about 3 months). So while waiting on the AF he looked into the Navy. Recruiters assured him he was fine. He has one on his chest but it can not be seen wearing a "crew neck" t shirt. or even with the two top buttons on a dress shirt undone.  He did well on his ASVAB, and was called this morning to tell him to report to MEPS on Thursday for his physical, 20 minutes later he gets a call and says the "Chief" need to see him before he goes for his physical.

They had him put on a "V neck" t shirt, his tattoo is Greek lettering (Honor thy Family),

and they could see the top half of two of the letters. Recruiter told him "sorry automatic disqualification"  Supposedly this new rule about the V necks started last week?? I have called everyone I could find on the Navy site. Even spoke to a Master Recruiter" who said he knew nothing of the "v Neck" shirt...has always been a crew neck?? unfortunately that "master recruiter" could not find my son because there are two in NY State, and my son is affiliated with the New England branch. Someone is going to call us tomorrow. Has any one heard of this "new Rule". My son was so excited about his future with Navy. He did go back to the AF recruiter, who oddly enough already knew about the Navy (the Navy Chief called him) I think he acted a little fast but he was so frustrated, after taking the ASVAB he got a call from the AF saying he was good to go (his Tattoos) but had already decided NAVY..So he told the AF that he was exploring other options. Now the Af guy is saying he is willing to stick his neck out and give my son a second chance but only if he follows through. He has an Appt with the AF tomorrow!! Any thoughts on this folks??? It all seems like a scam? How can a Master recruiter not know anything about this new rule but his PO1 does??  HELP!!!

  • Jim,

Thank you for your reply, Well after talking to a few people and getting a call back form the "commander" from the New England center, It appears that my sons recruiting station was given, or misinterpreted some recent information. They issued April 1st a few new dress codes etc. I guess by adding the work "elliptical" to the T-shirt information appears to have caused some confusion. His recruiter called him this morning and ans informed him they used the wrong shirt (V-neck). SOO they had him come in and take 2 pictures, one in the blue khaki and one in a green dress shirt, with one button undone, no tattoos showing, my son asked why he was not able to wear a "crew neck" under the shirts. and from what I have read it states "either a crew neck t shirt OR button down. Now it has to be sent up the chain of command. I am still a little concerned but feel a little better. I know mistakes happen, but prior to this incorrect information he did not have to have any pictures taken because they were not visible wearing a crew neck. When I spoke to the "chief" when this first started, he informed me that there were sailors with contracts and ship dates who now had to be called to say they are no longer eligible for the Navy, I can not imagine how those future sailors and parents must have felt.  I truly hope this work outs for my son and anyone else involved with this situation.

    Thanks for letting me vent!!

    Rich
