New Recruit

Hello fellow dads and former shipmates/Marines! My son, "Bubba", reported to NTC Great Lakes on Thursday January 22nd. We received his call that he's arrived at Boot Camps but have yet to learn which division/company etc. he's in. After Great Lakes, he's going to Pensacola for Air Crew and AW A school. Exciting time!! This is my first log in and hope to be in contact with many of you over the next 5 years, 51 weeks and 4 days!!!

  • Welcome aboard, Mark.
My son arrived an NTC Great Lakes on 22Jan and I believed he began his boot experience on the 27th as well. Last Friday we received the form letter from the RTC C.O. thanking us for him ( We'll see how excited the command will be in another 6 weeks)! My son also jotted 3 lines of the bottom of the skippers letter. Generic stuff..."miss you, it's cold, great chow, its cold, how are the animals, its cold, really think I could be good at this." I truly believe my man is getting mentally, physically and emotionally stronger each day. Upon graduation, I won't be expecting a transformation but am certain he'll be a different "Bubba"
My recruit is on Ship 7, Division 127. And yours?
Anybody else out there serving with 7/127?
    Stay strong, my brothers!

  • Greetings,
My son Andrew has been in nearly a year. He has been through Pensacola AE A school and C school at Whidbey Island. He is now attached to a patrol squadron based at Marine Base Hawaii. He is temporary attached to a squadron at he base as his is in the Middle East. Andrew is not sure if he is to join his squadron in the Middle East or not. Scuttlebutt has it that another group will be sent to the "sand box" in early March.
If I can help with any info about Pensacola, please ask!
    Chuck
  • He likes it down there. Complains it's cold in the mornings (I sent him pics of the 12 inches of snow we had, should keep him quiet for a few minutes) but it warms up in the afternoon. Once he earned off base privliges he was happy. There is a WalMart about 1/2 mile from the gate nearest his barracks and he keeps his snack supplies and fridge full. He calls or emails several times a week, much better than the wait and see if he can call of boot camp.

welcome aboard. Congrates on your son's enlistment. My son grads form RTC at Great Lakes On 06 Feb. If you've already received the 30 second phone call, the dreaded "box" can't be far behind. I too am new to this site but find no matter what your feeling or thinking, someone here has been there / done that. Great words of encouragment to be found here my brother.

Congratulations to your son! Your son is in for the ride of his life and his family is going to be his biggest support system. My son told me that while his RDC, shipmates, and chaplain were very supportive of him, it was his letter from him Mom and I that provided the biggest support at the lowest of times. Please ask questions and I am sure someone on here will be able to help you...I know they were a big support for me, especially those first couple of weeks when my son left for GL.

  • Hi David,

Thanks for writing. The "BOX" has arrived and my wife sniffed my sons aroma for an hour. Awaiting our first letter.
How does your sailor like Pensacola?

  • Not counting the days until he's done are you................................LOL. The wife started counting the days until his PIR from BC. The boys down at P'cola but on the other side of the base from where your son will be going. It took about 2 weeks to get his address at BC, you should be getting the "BOX" any day now.

  • Hey, welcome aboard!!! You will find this a great site, along with N4M's. Please encourage your wife to join N4M's, she'll have a blast on there. Things tend to be more mellow over here:) My son is set to PIR next Friday, 1/30/09 and has just passed Battle Stations as of yesterday. I too was an AW while in the Navy back in the 80's...your son is about to have an incredible experience!!! Is he planning on being a SAR swimmer? Again, welcome aboard and please do not hesitate to ask any questions, there are some wonderful fathers on here that will really be willing to help answer them all!
