My son is at RTC now, and will go to his Operations Specialist 'A' school after PIR.
I'm assuming that means he'll be an E-1. I saw the pay rate chart ($1,400 monthly) and I'm wondering how the heck he's going to live off that. It's ~$270 per week. I'm assuming this is normal but what am I missing here?

free housing, free meals, free medical and not a lot of free time to spend his money on. That's how.
This one with the calculator should give you a better idea:

$350/week at that payrate...housing and food provided for minimal expense...medical taken care of..They all make due...Shop at NEX...Carl...he will be fine...relax!
Most sailors graduate from RTC as an E2 and some as E3. So right out of BC, they have 2-months worth of pay banked. They also receive "allowances"...
