My son has been fortunate to have called home 4 times. after the initial 'I got here" call. Two of thise were for information for his background check. The other two were mroe personal calls. Both of those were around 1-2 in the afternoon. One was the Saturdayu prior to Christmas, the other was the day after Christmas. None on Christmas day. Which I had been told, or read, not to expect one on Christmas. PIR is 3 weeks from today. With that I am waiting on the "I am a sailor" call after Battlestations 21, whcih should begin week ofter next.
