Possible leave after boot camp?

My son who is in bootcamp Div 803, is scheduled to graduate 12/21/2012. My wife and I were wondering if he would possibly get any leave after bootcamp and before dive prep?. With this being only 4 days before Christmas and and holiday travel being what it is, we need all the heads up we can get.

Also if he were to get any leave, any clues on how long. He said before he left, that he would prefer us to wait and come visit him at dive school instead of coming to Great Lakes for bootcamp graduation. If he were to get leave though, I could drive up for PIR and bring him home for Christmas.

I guess I am just thinking out loud, because everything is pure speculation at this point. A fourteen hour drive is well worth the effort to see him for a few days. (last minute air travel virtually impossible that week)

Any thoughts on him getting leave ?

  • Greetings to all, I am getting a lot of info from this site...Does anyone have any insight on MA school in San Antonio and possible leave for New Years? My son is @ RTC and has PIR 12/28. My understanding is that on 12/29 he will be flown to San Antonio for his A school. If there is a chance that he would have some leave time after he checks into Lackland, I would rather fly to SA and spend some measurable time with him rather than a few hours following PIR...

    Any insight is greatly appreciated...

  • Thanks John, got a letter Wednesday, stating the same. Good News !
  • My son wrote us he will have several days liberty over Christmas before A school.
  •  Thank you for the info SSG LoGiudice. I'm curious how all this will play out. Also let me say THANK YOU and your daughter for your service to our country ! Remaining hopeful for some time with him for Christmas. Happy Holidays !

  • My daughter graduates 16 Nov and A school doesn't start til Dec 3, she doesn't get leave--she will most likely be doing watch. We think she will get off from 24 Dec- 2 Jan. That has been my experience in the Marines...Usually about 10-11 days. That will be the time to fly him home. He should get time for Thanksgiving as well, but since he is new to the unit, expect the worst shifts, as it is usually a 'seniority' thing. Plan on a few days 21-26 off during this time as well. Our SAILORs do not have much leave time accrued...2.5 days per month, so by Thanksgiving, they will only have 7.5 days accrued, and although some units allow you to go into a deficit, its rather rare, especially for new members.
  •   Thanks Jim for the reply. I hope maybe we can find something out soon. The holidays add a degree of difficulty to all of this.
