The Drivers License

We got the form letter today with his Division 370 ship 3. On it he put a handwritten note that he thinks he left his driver license in his shorts and he needs us to overnight it asap. Apparently he needs it for something. It was good to hear from him. He is a big NFL fan so I am clipping the standings and scores from each Monday paper and mailing it to him. We got his PIR date in the letter of 11-9-12. Cannot wait. While I am thinking about it what are you guys recommendations for lodging? And how do you get to the base? If you drive on you must show registration and insurance. So this seems to rule out rental car.
Thanks for your input,
Rod Keefe

  • ROD, FROM YOUR OTHER POST, SEEMS LIKE YOU ALREADY MADE UP YOUR MIND YOU WERE GONNA GET THAT DL MAILED OUT. NOW YOU HAVE A REASON, I GUESS.

HOW YOU GET TO THE BASE DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU'RE COMING FROM. LIKE KEVIN SAID, CHECK THE PIR GROUP AND PIR FORUM ON THIS SITE. THERE'S ALL KINDS OF DETAILS IN POSTS FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN THERE, INCLUDING MINE, ON THE WHO/WHAT/HOW/WHERE OF PIR.

ADMIN PAUL PUT A "GREAT LAKES LODGING GUIDE" IN THERE WITH A LINK TO TRIPADVISOR.

PS: YOU'LL FIND THAT MOST PEOPLE RECOMMEND YOU TAKE A SHUTTLE OR CAB TO PIR.

  • Under the PIR group you'll find directions to RTC. I know many others utilize a rental car to attend PIR and I believe a copy of the rental agreement from the rental company will satisfy the registration and insurance requirements - but do a little more research just to make sure. You'll also need to present a vehicle pass which you can download from the RTC website 11 days prior to the graduation. The form letter your SR sent has the password to download the pass.

As far as lodging goes, I've read that Springhill Suites are recommended by a lot of people. They offer special rates for PIR. This site and Navyformoms.com have a lot of info on where to stay. I'm staying at the Navy Lodge located on base for the 9/28/12 PIR but you need a military ID to make reservations. I think there is a way your SR could reserve the room for you. Maybe someone who knows more about that could respond here. A family member attending the graduation with us is formerly Air Force - otherwise we'd be staying somewhere else.

  • From the family guide on the Recruit Training Command web site.

"When driving onto Recruit Training Command please
have your driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of
insurance, and vehicle gate pass ready as you will not be
admitted without them. If you will be driving a rental car
the rental agreement and your driver’s license will suffice."
