My daughter is going to be attending A School in Great Lakes for Machinist Mate. I was curious how this transition takes place after PIR. Do they transport all of her belongings/gear over to A School? And is this where she will return to each night after liberty? She graduates 11/22/13. Thanks for the feedback in advance!!

After PIR we had an 30-45 min with our daughter and went to the NEX. She had to report back to get ready to go over to Great Lakes. We had time to go back to motel and change and get lunch. We got a call she was headed to gate to meet us around about 2:30pm which was a little earlier than we expected. When we checked in at PIR we were given info sheet for parents whose recruits were going to Great Lakes. That indicated to expect our sailors anytime between 2 and 4pm. Just take Buckley past RTC and follow it around just past main gate to visitors entrance. There are good signs marking entrance.
She had to check out of her quarters with "on base" then we had to go back with her for her to check back in and be checked out with us and signing her out with us. Also had to sign her back in when we took her back. One thing information sheet didn't specify, although I thought I had seen it on Navy Dads somewhere, is once we meet her at the gate, we could drive onto base with her to check her out or back in. First time she met us, we walked back with her and of course all our IDs were checked at walk in gate. That night when we took her back we she was going to walk us in to check her in then go back to gate with us. We had our ID's checked and guard asked if we where just bringing her back. He then told us if we had a car, we could drive onto base as long as she was with us when we entered. Saturday and Sunday mornings, she met us at walk out gate by visitor center and we drover back to her building to check her back out and when we brought her back.
Friday night had the longest line to check back in so I would plan on having them back at least an hour before deadline. She also found out some sailors get moved from their first quarters. Had a message from her today she gets to stay where she is but some of the other rates and males were being moved. Don't buy a bunch of things or big items they may have to move. One person had a TV and play station and another had some storage drawers when they came back. Keep it to what they can pack easily. All our daughter bought was some personal hygiene and cloth items. She also got a new ultra book. She didn't want anything that wouldn't fit into her sea bag.
Thanks Paul!!

She is in the Navy so all her belongings will fit into a sea bag...she'll get it over there, believe on a bus. Those bags are NOT lite by the way....I helped my son with his when he shipped to Hawaii and it had to be about 75 pounds........
check in will take 4-5 hours then you should be able to pick her up. She will have to report back to base each night....allow plenty of time as getting back late for muster is a huge no-no and the walk is pretty long. Allow an hour at least. She may have duty/watch so plan to be flexible.
