  • I write two sometimes three times a day!  I send summaries of her favorite TV shows that I have printed out on the computer.  I send newspaper articles.  She loves getting pictures.  Sometimes I just sent jokes/riddles.  Just write, write, and write some more!  My daughter left July 26th, and we got our first phone call today, and she said that the mail is what is keeping her sane!!!  She already asked for a large SASE (manila) to be mailed to her so that she can send her mail back home because she doesn't have room to keep everything.  I have also sent her labels with her address, our address, and a few friends that she wants to write to.  This saves her a ton of time because she just has to put the labels and a stamp on her letters to be mailed home!

  • I agree with all above and would note that, from your recruits point of view, so much effort and activity is being packed into each day that time is not passing in the same way it would at home.  For contrast I would say that, when I was away in college, I saw friends every day and contact with home once a month, at most, was plenty. In Basic Training (Army) three or more days without mail from someone felt like a long time.

  • Thanks you guys!
  • .............echoing the previous comments.................

Write when your heart calls you to do so...............     Truly, as corny as that line reads..........we helped ourselves by writing our thoughts to our sons/daughters while we are at home and they are away........sharing the trivial details of life at home (because they cannot experience same) - cat peeing where it is not supposed to; daffy neighbor doing what  he always does; in additiion to all of the other idiosynchrasies of our households.............not that any of us have any.......LOL...........

plus, it reminds all of us and our sons/daughters how to slow down and compose a letter.........

    Enjoy the ride ~ Pat

  • Write every day if you can!  Sundays I would send a weekend summary with pictures, sports scores, news, anything and everything.  This is the only thing they have to look forward to, my son said it kept him sane.  And he wrote back as often as he could.  It's an emotional time for everyone, so I agree, is therapeutic.

Patience, you'll be attending graduation in no time!

  •    I would say as much as you can! I used to send 2-3 letters per week. Firstly....it is good therapy for the parents and is about the only way that we can help our SR's during the 8 weeks of Basic. Secondly, it is a real boost to our children to receive the support from home. I know that my Daughter was thrilled with every letter. A helpful hint is to number the letters in the corner so that your SR can read them in order
