The duties performed by YNs include:
- preparing, typing and routing correspondence and reports;
- organizing and maintaining files;
- receiving office visits and handling telephone communications;
- operating personal computers, word processing, duplicating, audio-recording and other office machines;
- performing office personnel administration;
- maintaining records and official publications;
- performing administrative functions for legal proceedings;
- serving as office managers;
- performing other various clerical and administrative duties.
Working Environment
Yeomen are usually assigned duties in an office environment. People in this rating may work alone with little supervision, or work closely with others under close supervision depending on the assignment.
Security Clearance Requirement: Secret
Qualifications and Interests
People in this rating must be U.S. citizens eligible for security clearances. They should also be people oriented and enjoy working as part of a team assisting others and be able to clearly communicate ideas and information orally and in writing. Ability to keep accurate records, do detailed work and perform repetitive tasks is important. Resourcefulness, curiosity and a good memory are also useful. Typing skills are mandatory. A typing test is required during training.
YN - Administrative Assistant
Administrative Assistant - performs general office, clerical, and administrative duties, including typewriting, office machine operation, office communication, filing and records maintenance. Maintains files, operates duplicating, adding, calculating, and copying machines. Serves as a paralegal assistant/counselor when a legalman is not available; types correspondence, reports, and other communication from rough draft (a straight-copy typing rate of at least 30 words per minute is required).
YN - Administrative Supervisor
Administrative Supervisor - supervises and performs general office, clerical, and administrative duties, including typewriting, office machine operation, office communication, filing and records maintenance. Maintains files, operates duplicating, adding, calculating, and copying machines. Performs the duties required of an Administrative Assistant. Organizes and monitors filling and records maintenance, retention, and disposal, maintains officer personnel records; routes correspondence, types records, correspondence and reports (a straight-copy typing rate of at least 40 words per minute is required); sends, receives, and accounts for official and registered mail; advises personnel of benefits, types of duty, and resolution of personal problems. Perform duties required for YN2, drafts correspondence, instructions, and notices (a straight-copy typing rate of at least 50 words per minute is required), verifies accuracy of job orders and work requests; assists in the supervision of clerical functions. Maintains classified materials controls systems; verifies accuracy of official correspondence and reports; monitors submission and maintenance of officer fitness reports, supervises and directs clerical functions.
YN - Office Manager
Office Manager - manages and performs the duties required for an Administrative Supervisor. Able to perform the duties required for YNC; interviews, assigns, supervises, and evaluates office personnel; recommends improvements in office procedures; procures and allocates office materials and equipment; supervises and controls the security of sensitive records; trains officer personnel; functions as office supervisor. YNCM: Able to perform the duties required for YNCS; establishes goals, objectives, and priorities in the administration of the office function; plans, organizes, implements, coordinates, and controls activities; reviews and makes recommendations concerning office personnel, equipment, and supply requirements; develops operating budget for the office and monitors office expenditures; prepares staff studies.
