Well my son is on his first full day of boot camp. Guess it wasn't a good idea to take the day off after sending him off. Has been on my mind all day wondering how he is doing and how things are going.

Thanks Mike I am back at work now just gonna try and stay busy until that phone call. That's what I keep hearing is about 3 weeks for the first phone call. It seems so far away at this point. I guess I just worry something is going to happen and he will be sent home. As much as I miss him I don't want him to be sent home. Its like he is living my life I always wanted. I wanted more than anything to go to the Military, but due to my medical history and the fact I had to take daily medication at the time I couldn't even get a wavier. Everyone's help on here has been great. Thanks for the advise on the area code and display. I definitely don't want to miss his call I would just be devastated. I am very proud of him and the reason he chose to go to the Military. He has always been a very independent and helpful child with his younger brother and sisters. H e was very nosey as a child and would do anything he could to help, if he ever heard us talking about having financial difficulty he would try to step in and give us money, of course we never accepted it and told him everything would be fine. He had said he wanted to be a Doctor since he was 7 years old. When he was in Jr High he came up to his mother and I telling us he wanted to go into the Military. I was kind of shocked to hear this out of a child that hated the out doors and would much rather be inside, I just asked why. He told us that he knew for him to go to School to be a Doctor would be way too much money for us and if he went to the Military he would have help paying for his Schooling. I was floored but every since then I have looked up on websites and explained to him all the stuff he would have to do out side and the physical stuff, but he never changed his mind and was dead set on the NAVY and succeeding. Every time that boy puts his mind to do something he always achieves his goals. Sorry just had to tell the story and yes I'm so very proud of him!!!!
Hi Scott,
I too was just bumming all day when he left--it never goes away but it does get easier once he get to have some communication with you other than the short phone call stating that he arrived. My son has been at great Lakes for three weeks and although we have not received a letter as yet, he did earn some time to call home and it was just great to hear that he is having the time of his life and is totally okay.
My advice to you is just hang in there, as he'll get to call you very soon. Please tell everyone at your house hold that the area code from the Great Lakes Boot Camp is (847)--in fact the phone and even the TV will state "pay phone" call. This is good as you will know that its not a telemarketer and if you're on the other line with someone--hang up with that person--cuz your son may not be able to call you back.
Be proud--your guidance helped him get there--now its on him and dont worry he's got this!!
best,
Mike
