Day one

Hello all!  This is it, the first day.  My family and friends spent the morning at MEPS, and with some pulled strings where fortunate enough to have a private swearing in with a couple of dozen family and friends.

Then he got on the bus for a 4 1/2 hour ride to Great Lakes.

We got "THE" Call this evening.  He sounded in good spirits, and happy.

His 6 siblings are all taking it well ( he is the oldest ) and we are all extremely proud of this step he is taking.  We all shed some tears.  Sad he is going,  and of course pride for what he is doing.

8 more weeks...then 8 weeks of sub school...then a year of tech school, then off to his sub.

So glad I found this site!

  • thanks - sounds like you are getting close to Graduation, congrats to you and your son!

  • From what has happened to us.  you get "The Call"  (Hello, I am here, talk to you later) tonight.  You will get a box within a few days of things he cant keep.  Then we got our first real call about 10 days in, and a letter the same week.  So far, 2 real calls a couple of letters, and we are about 4 weeks in.

Good luck to your son.  I am sure he will be fine.  They take good care of them over there.

  • Thanks David- good info- was a rough couple of days seeing our son off - sure he will be fine once he gets going!

  • You will get a form letter from him within 2 weeks.  It will have his address, and graduation date.

  • My son got to Boot Camp early this morning - how will we know when his potential graduation will be?

  • Got the form letter Saturday. Ship 11 Div. 317
  • Got his box in the mail last Friday. We are still waiting to find out his address. Would like to get some letters off to him.
  • Just type- Recruit Training Command Facebook -into your search engine and it should come right up. Ya, we'll have to wait and see which company or "ship" they are placed in and see if they are the same. I went through boot camp at Great Lakes 32 years ago. Looks like a lot has changed but I'm sure the basics are still the same. Looks like a better and tougher program than what I had but they should be better prepared for shipboard life.
  • It was a long day!  I am sure you can relate.  Who knows, maybe they are in the same group.

Which Facebook group are you talking about?

Our son got to boot camp last night. Like you, we spent the day at MEPS. Watched him swear in and then off to the airport for the flight from Des Moines, Iowa to Chicago. We got our call at 11:21 last night. He sounded in good spirits and ready to get this going. Check out the navy boot camp Facebook page. They post photos of random divisions during training. Might get a picture of our boys in there someday. Not this early in the process but maybe in a few weeks.
