Promotions in Boot Camp

Can someone tell me when promotions are given out? Are they given throughout basic, or is it something that happens after battlestations?

Can you give some idea of what might earn an SR a promotion?

  • Thanks, Hannah, for the comprehensive information. I think you   have hit all the important points.

What I've learned from my (3 years ago recruit) is that the most important thing is

__support your shipmates__  when you have mastered some skill -- help your shipmates to do so also.

This skill is the most important one that the RDC's are looking for for promoting recruits -- not just to surpass the requirements -- but to encourage shipmates to do so also successfully.  Leadership. Results.

So to answer your question -- very few recruits get a promotion and show at PIR with two stripes unless they have it in their contract beforehand.

Three years ago at PIR I saw a dozen or so with three red stripes -- nukes .

A few  with the three pale blue stripes -- construction trades -- presume they had votech or journeyman quals before enlisting.

Several dozen  with two  green stripes -- airman

A few dozen with seaman stripes -- can get for jrotc or college or other quals

A  few with other stripes -- mostly hospital corpsmen presumably with prior EMT or LPN training or experience.

If don't have it in contract very unlikely get paygrade upgrade at RTC

The majority with no stripes --       Do they still call them " french fries"

RTC is an unlikely place to get an uprate -- before or after more likely -- but possible for a dedicated and competent recruit.

NAVY does provide many training opps sky limit -- no sh*t.

    Hope this helps.

AND refer back to what Hannah wrote -- it's possible to get an upgrade at RTC -- but difficult.

If your recruit does it --  super cool.

    Ric
