What is so inportant about pulling wisdom teeth? I read somewhere or heard that the recruit's division gets docked points because the recruit being down due to recovery. This just seems to me to be a wierd way of check and balances. I was in the Army for two years and the Air Force for four and never had any wisdom teeth removed.

We tried to get my son's pulled before he entered boot camp but the oral surgeon got sick and canceled his appointment. By the time it was re-scheduled, it was too close to boot camp so he didn't get them pulled. My son said that it worked out fine . . . they only pulled his 2 bottom wisdom teeth and he said that the didn't feel that bad after the first few hours and then he got 2 days SIQ. Those 2 days SIQ did not hurt his progress or harm his division in any way. His recommendation was NOT to get them pulled before you left home and let the Navy take care of it.
Glad to see you bring this up. My understanding was just as William pointed out. For fear of needing them taken out overseas. Easier to pull them in boot camp instead of aboard a rocking ship or from a foreign dentist in a foreign land.
I believe the points you speak of might have something to do with the Captain's Cup. The winning division is awarded the Captain's Cup before graduation. It's just for bragging rights. All divisions will have people down due to this or injury's, sickness, etc.
There are no dentists on Navy ships and if wisdom teeth get infected it can get very serious. I think that is why they get pulled. If you are on a sub they are submerged for months so they probably figure better play it safe.
I hope this practice doesn't exist anymore but the reference was that if your division was unable to not have everyone present for whatever reason they lost points. It doesn't seem fair because it is out of the recruits hands as they canot say yea or nay at this point
