My son will soon be graduating MA at Lackland next month then he's off to Gulfport (~6 weeks) and then heading to Norfolk (~4 weeks) before being sent off to Bahrain.

Does anyone know what training he will receive at Gulfport and Norfolk?

  • My son went to ECS in Gulfport in April, Went back to Norfolk/Portsmouth for May, then spent the month of June back home before shipping to Bahrain on July 3. So the sailors do get leave time, a goodly amount.

He won't be able to tell you much about his orders, but he will know his departure date. He will get his leave right before that.

  • My son got order for Rivron as well. Gets his pin 11-1 then heads to Gulfport and then Norfolk? Said would then be deployed to Bahrain for a year. Will he get any leave time prior to deployment?

  • Welcome!

My son went through Expeditionary Combat School (ECS) down in Gulfport last April to prepare for his assignment with the Riverine Squadron 2. He's in Bahrain now, (well, out on a mission at the moment, shipboard, and out of contact for OpSec) until next summer. They form teams that function as a force protection and security team, and perform special missions as well. They receive more weapons training, a continuation from A school, and also other skills, including close quarters combat (CQB).

Norfolk/Portsmouth is the home of RivRon2. They're considered descendants of the River Rats of the Vietnam War, the crews that took the fast boats up river and incountry. The teams are comprised of sailors from several ratings, not just Masters at Arms.

There is a Facebook page for RivRon2, if that is indeed his track, and I think it is.

Are you going to San Antonio for his badge ceremony? It's low key and smaller than the P-I-R, but cool, and San Antonio is pretty neat, especially the River Walk downtown.
