I gave my son 2 challenge coins for his PIR: The RTC coin and the Ship 14 U.S.S. Arizona coin(his ship for boot camp). He is an E2 Seaman Apprentice studying to be a Fire Controlman, which I assume he will attain at the end of "A" School. I wanted to get him the E2 Seaman Apprentice coin now, and the FC coin for when he finishes "A" School. Is this the proper etiquette for giving a challenge coin for ratings, to give it after they achieve the rating?

On his E3, E4, E5 coins I had his name, AWF3, AWF2, etc, and his home town engraved on them.
If you know the actual dates of the advancement, you could have those engraved too.
I really think you're going to enjoy ordering and giving these to your sailor.
We spent some time with my son in Virginia before his deployment and I was surprised at how many coins he has amassed already.
Thanks for the input Scott, I am hoping to do exactly the same for my sailor. What I am wondering, and this question is to all my new friends, is what kinds of things are you engraving on the coins? Or are you engraving anything? I'd like it to be personal, but not overdone.
The challenge coins are a great gift as well as a mark of achievements earned by your sailor.
My son is an aircrewman and I get him a challenge coin for each ship he lands on and each base he goes to as well as the rating coins.
Works for me! Shouldn't be any issue since technically he is rated once he grads A
school.
