Liberty after PIR

Question: My son graduates April 1st. He is Grad & Go, so he has to register right after graduation. I have heard two different versions here on this site. One version is my son gets to stay with us all weekend and we have to get him back on Sunday before 20:45.

The other story I read here was that he would have to be returned every night before 21:00. Obviously I'm hoping for the former.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Would my son be able to tell me? Communication with him is slow as you all know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

James

  • New rule:

    Effective Immediately:

New Sailors reporting to TSC GL from RTC after PIR will no longer have overnight liberty, they will be in Phase 1 and treated as such; with the exception they can leave the base only if their family is here and they must have approval from the Barracks LCPO.  They MUST return to the base and barracks EVERY night at the time told to them by their COC in the barracks.

    No overnights no exceptions.

This policy started 11 March 2011

  • remember even if they are grad and go the the base across the street, they may well have duty or need to stand a watch sometime during the weekend

  • James,  Our son's PIR was Feb 18th. Unfortunately,  He was considered Grad And Go but his A school is there in Great Lakes. We had to get him back each night to the base.

Friday & Saturday for us was 21:00, Sunday was at 20:00.  Believe me, you'll enjoy the time you'll have with him but it's tough taking them back.

Your son will know the schedule the day of the PIR.  He will probably have to check out and then he is free to go.  It took our son about 30 minutes and then we were out of there.

It's really difficult for the ones leaving Great Lakes because the time is very limited.

  • FACT NOT FICTION: Liberty Policy per Skipper Linter (CO of  TSC) started on 03/11/2011.No Exceptions

The liberty policy will be that the new students have liberty until 9PM (2100 hours) on Friday. They will go back on liberty at 7:30 AM (07:30 hours) on Saturday but will return by 9PM (21:00 hrs. The same will be true for Sunday.

Per the Skipper, This is a command decision made for the purposes of equal treatment for RTC graduates coming to TSC. I realize it may not be a popular decision for everyone but it is one that I feel is in the best interest of the NAVY.

Blue and Gold Instruction that is the TSC Local Training Support Center Great Lakes Facebook page. Go down back to March 6, 2011 that is where the talk is. I will try to have the Skipper post to NAVY DAD'S I am working on the contact as I type.       Gary T.

  • Well I am here to give you yet another version...............grad and go is exactly what it means. Normally they are on their way from GL to where ever their A school is within hours. When my son PIR'd there were Grad and Go sailors that were leaving for the airport 2 hours afterwards. If you know which airport you should be able to meet with them and spnd time until their flight is ready to board (TSA rules change so check at the airport), we just met our son at the USO at stayed there until he had to leave. Your son may not know until that morning or at the earliest a day before when he has to leave. Thank god it gets easier once they get out of GL and to A school.
  • To clarify a little more. If some one's Sailor is attending A school somewhere other then in Great Lakes they are the one's that have to return to base each night.
  • James,

If your Sailor is going to A school in Great Lakes then he will be able to spend the weekend away from the base with the family. He will go immediately from PIR to report in to his A school across the street. This could take a few hours but then he will be granted Liberty until Sun night. Have a great time at PIR!
