My son is planning to come home from BESS for leave during the holidays.  I have seen some of the local transportation places who run from Hartford and they charge almost $200.00 each way.  Isn't there a duty driver that runs from the airport?  Is there a cheaper shuttle van?  When I was stationed in Bangor Subase in Bangor, WA they had a shuttle from the Seatac airport that was $17.00 each way for a 40 mile trip.  They still run that shuttle for $25.00 I believe.

Can someone help?

Tim

  • My son is having the same dilemma. The duty shuttle only runs certain days and not the day of his return flight from holiday leave (12/29). We found a taxi for $125 one way but the tip will make it $150. Its a lot of money for a sailor who just spent $500 to come home for Christmas.
  • Scott, Thank  you for your response.  I will have him call the ombudsman to see if they can assist with a way back.  Thanks for your help.

Our son was able to use a duty shuttle to get to the airport from Groton last year upon his graduation.  I don't know if there are any restrictions.  He traveled twice from Groton.  On one trip for a visit (Christmas last year) he was able to share a ride with a sailor stationed at Groton who drove a few folks to the airport (they all kicked in a bit).  He did use a duty driver/shuttle for his departure last May upon graduation.  He had transfer leave and was able to stop at home for a week prior to departure for his first duty station.  I believe he coordinated the shuttle with the travel office.  Another place to find out info could be the subbase ombudsman.
