Served aboard USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 1977-1980. West Pac 1977-1978 Boat people rescue. 1979-1980 Iranian Hostage crisis.
I worked as an OSSN in CIC starting in surface radar standing watch and lookouts. Advanced to PO 2nd class, watch supervisor in CIC, supervised sea and anchor conducting radar navigation exiting and entering ports. Attended Anti Submarine Air Traffic Control school and became an ASAC.
My favorite duty was between my first and second cruise our division was given the assignment to chip the paint of the mast with needle guns. Four of my best buds all enjoyed setting our schedule and completing our task ahead of schedule
I am now retired from a career in transportation. I also followed my dream career of becoming a professional Baseball Umpire working in the Pioneer League.
Now I dream of taking a Tiger Cruise aboard one of the Super Carriers.
After attending A school I put in my dream orders to be on a Frigate out of Long Beach upon graduation I was assigned to the, “Battle Cat” slightly depressed. I must have spoken about it enough to make an impression on my chief. One night while conducting signal book drills with the USS Sample my chief arraigned a duty exchange. I was helicoptered to the sample for a week. I can say after the week I was so thankful to return by cage during unrep home to my ship and returning to living like a king. No more hot racking or sea sickness for me. Also Golden Shellback. And of course thankful for traveling the world and even more thankful for my country and our standard of living.
I am most proud of being a U.S. Navy Sailor the best job I’ve ever had. I am also a Past Master of Mosaic Lodge #184 in Colorado. Our lodge just initiated a new brother that is on active duty as a recruiter.

Welcome aboard to NavyDads.com Joe! When my son first enlisted, I was a little scared and worried for him. Not coming from a military family at all, I had no idea what to expect. What I found, was that he had made the most mature decision of his life! I found lots of answers to my questions right here on NavyDads.com.
My son Stephen was an AWO2 in the P-3 community. However, after 6 years of service, he was medically discharged in July of 2014. We are so proud of our son and his service to our country. I'm sure you feel that same pride for you child. This is the place to brag!
Glad to see you have joined us on Facebook as well!
Once again, welcome to our site and I hope you enjoy your stay here. GO NAVY! HOOYAH!
Best Regards- Jim
